So what are you guys doing for an air intake with the 3800 SC?

Are people just slapping on a K&N?

I have a filter mounted in the wheel hub with a flex tube to the compartment but its only 3 inches in diameter. I have the old rubber stock connector, it's around 4 inches. Just trying to design something. Any pictures would be appreciated.

The 2.8 stock intake hose might be a little confusing. It's 4" on the filter housing side, and about 3" on the TB side. And the stock air muffler in/out tubes are both 3".

You're better having the filter in the fender, than having an open cone filter in the engine bay sucking in the hot air.

I've seen people using the stock air filter housing on swaps, and people doing the in-fender cone on stock cars. There's also the Cavalier composite filter housing, which is approximately the same as the stock 2.8 filter housing.

I'm going to upgrade mine at some point to a more modern rectangular filter housing, either by swapping in one from another car (if I can find one that fits correctly), or by making a custom housing. If I go the latter route, it will likely be made out of carbon fiber, and will be a bolt-in replacement for the stock housing.

If you want to go the route Ryan did with the truck tubing drop me a line. I managed to score two of them at a local yard. He has a picture in his thread

GM P/N: 25176891 - 99-? 4.3 V6 Silverado induction tube/duct w/ bellows and clamps.

You can get away with using only 1 induction tube (cut in half and reassembled) if you run a smaller open-element air filter as seen below:

If you run a larger filter, you may need to buy a second induction tube and cut the elbow off of it so you can orient the filter as shown below:

There are many ways to design the CAI system for a 3800SC Fiero. On my 87GT I wanted a full 4" system from start to finish so we welded 4" flanges on the input and output side of the stock air filter canister. Then a 4" 45* boat exhaust elbow was used to bring the pipe into the wheel well. Next aluminum tubing was used to couple the filter to true outside air via a greatly modified Holly side scoop.

The SLP MAF was not added in this picture.

In addition to opening the 'Vents" on the side a nuber of 1/2 dia holes reside on the bottom of the scoop. In stock form the scoop would have been restrictive.

To complement the breathing we used an LS1 MAF sensor and a N* TB (that are both larger in diameter than the GTP's are). This assured good air flow all the way through.
