Hey guys, I'm planning on "blacking out" my Fiero. Is it easier to use spray tint, or the vinyl type? I am about average when it comes to spray painting, but I'm hoping that its thinner, or something. Any help?

The spray tint is not meant for windows you want to see out of. It is not a clear transperancy. The film takes some practice to get it right without air bubbles and wrinkles or creases. It is probably cheaper to have it done by a pro, but if you want the experiance of doing it yourself go for it !

I know, and I follow all the realistic rules; which include EXCESSIVE cleaning, no drugs, very high grades, etc. I thought MY CAR was one place where I could actually do what I want.

And also, its the reason for it all. Its not a safety issue or dislike of it or anything, its because "its too permanent".

Tell him you'll buy a spare set of tail lights so you can change it back if you ever want to.

Just have a rational conversation with him about it. I'm sure he sees it as a safety issue and is more concerned about your safety then he is about telling you what you cant do. Show him all the pics on here with them tinted and how they are still very much visible. And if yours is an 86-88 you still have the third brake light up top. Maybe you can come to a fair comprimise. You dont nee to tint them much for the blacked out look.

No, its definitely not a safety issue; he told me to find tail light covers. And the "rational conversation"... we'll thats pretty difficult..

Bummer ! Is yours a fastback ? If so then extra lense would be expensive just to have sit on a shelf for "just in case" Notchies would be easy to get.

There are alot more notchies out there in junkyards since 84-88 were all the same you should be able to get both for that price. Are there any pull and pay yards in your area ?

Auto Zone carries Rustoleum Spray Tint for lenses. I have no experience with it so I don't know how it compares to VHT Night Shades but it has the same intended purpose.

some times us parents have already made these dumb mistakes and just want to save you the pain of going through it yourself. my son always wants to try these crazy ideas on his fiero and i always have to try talk him out of it. dark tail lights i don't like. fiero's tail lights are already dark and making them darker is a bad idea. never a good idea to make your car harder to see to another driver, people are too distracted while they are driving already why make it harder to see your tail lights. they look cool if it is a show car not to drive but for safety i don't like it, just my opinion.

First check with your local laws. Here you cannot put any darker than 35% on front side windows. FieroLisa from here put darker on hers and got 2 tickets of $112 each. Last time cop told her she had to pull it off on the spot or he would impound the car. She also tinted her tail lites pretty dark. Following her in daylite, you couldnt see her brake lites and at nite the tail lights werent visible more than a few car lengths away. And in rainy or foggy conditions she might as well turned them off. Its all about degree. Technically here in Ohio, ANY modification of OEM lites are illegal as well as driving in town with fog or driving lites on. That even goes for replacing bulbs with HIDs.

If you can and must do the windows, save some grief and just pay a shop the $100 to do it for you. Dont put the spray on stuff on your windows. I did in the past years ago and it ruined the rubber and dew strips. You spray it on heavy and let it run to the bottom to get it on evenly and it all piles up at the bottom and gets hard as a rock.

I agree. Fieros are already small and hard to see. I wouldn't do anything to make that worse. Great for a show car, but nothing I would do to a street driven Fiero. And with my luck I would get a ticket immediately.

I believe that DeLorean00 used the VHT brand. I saved this thread because I thought that it was tastefully done. Perhaps you can direct your dad to this thread. I am sure that after he sees that you have done a bit of research, the two of you could come to some compromise. Good luck.

Here's an idea. Do it with window tint film. It can be peeled off later.

The film that you spray the water on definitely CAN be peeled off?

I peeled it off the windows on my truck. You have to use some cleaner to clean off the adhesives residue, but yes it peels off.

I always heard when mixing the water/soap solution to use Johnson baby shampoo... 1 to 2 - 10ths ratio or something like that.. It has a little oily substance to it and it doesn't evaporate quickly... thus not creating bubbles when the water dries.
