THIS IS NOT AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE !!I purchased an 86 Gt with bad transmission I was told this was a 4 speed by the owner,so I installed a 4 speed..I drove the car using only 3rd and 4th when I purchased it,,I thought it was a 4 speed the car was manufactured in may,86, sold on june 6,1986 the console plate shows a 5 speed shift patern..
I installed the shift cables the select & shift cables were properly connected at the tranny,, inside the cab the select was connected to THE SPRING LOADED driver side connection and the shift cable was connected to the vertical shifter swaped around I drove it twice went into reverse and I had 4 foward speeds buttery smooth unfiero like,,today I got into the car and it would not go into reverse and I had 2 forward gears 1st and 2nd...Now the large shift cable was not tight it could move in the slot at the tranny lever (proper lever) this is so crazy I do not expect anyone to beleave it ..
the shift cable is the one that came with the car..I replaced the select cable with a new 4 speed unit that I ordered
what cables do I need to solve this problem ??
the shift cable is to short to reach the proper yoke
the select cable reaches the proper yoke but the inner cable is not long enough..
this is not a common problem I hope some one can guide me to a cable that will work

I need a select cable with more travel
I need a shift cable that exterior sheath is longer

Are the yoke,s different ,,

Check this thread. The first 10 photos should help you confirm if you have a 4-speed.

You said that your cable slipped. If you don't have a Haynes Manual, get one, and check out the section about aligning the cables in the manual transmission section. This may be the cause of your shifting problem. If you aren't properly aligned, the shifter won't move across the neutral slot to the R, 1/2, and 3/4 gates.
