Yes, sorry there is no way to change it without taking the dist. apart. But the good thing is it allows you to clean everything and relube the bushing.
And don't even think of trying to pull the magnet off the top of the shaft. They are pressed on and you will break it long before you will get it off.

Thanks - I now know I can do it - I just have to figure out if I want to do it or pay to have it done. It's still pretty cold in my garage and the car is sitting at the mechanics.

One idea that I did was to go to a junk yard (or look thru the Mall) and get yourself another distributor. Clean it and install a new pick-up coil and module. Then give it to the shop and tell them to swap them. Take your original one and at your leisure, Install a new pick-up coil and ignition module. That way you have a spare that you can drop in if you ever have a problem again. On my first Fiero I did this the first time it went out. The second time it went out I was about 500 miles from home. I kept the spare distributor in the trunk with some tools. About 15 minutes later we were back on the road without any problems.

My manual says "Note 1985-88 The distributor assembly does NOT have to be removed to replace the pickup coil for the 1985-88 HEI distributors."
Since I have an 86 V6 can't i just lift it off the top?
(Guess I should of said I had an 86 in the first place.)
The manual is wrong. The star wheel is pressed onto the splined shaft and the friction of that fit is what holds it in place and also what sets end play in the distributor shaft. Pulling the reluctor off the shaft ruins that friction fit and not only that but there's no way to put it back on to the correct depth with the distributor in the car. In my experience, the reluctor will never stay in place once it's been removed. $90 mistake.

I have a box full of distributors over here in flint... let me know if your interested I can meet you half way or something.
I'll keep you in mind but in the mean time I just rebuilt mine. Turns out that it isn't that hard at all. I still don't trust the fact that I fixed my problem and I still need to reset the timing but things went just as advertised on the rebuild. The video really gave me the assurance that I could do it.
