Well I have finally gotten around to starting my project...going with the name SCARAB. Dont know why...it just sounds cool!

Started with dropping the cradle in preparation for a new engine, Removing the front Cradle Bushings and Rear Cradle Bushings...

Darn...PIP isnt working so I cant post the rest of the pics...when its up I'll add them...Cool flamage though!

I'm pretty sure that Scarab was the name of a fibreglass race car that Lance Reventlow (sp) raced back in the 60s.

Once I got the cradle all cleaned up...I sprayed it with a rust inhibitor and black primer.

This was the problem with the engine that was in the car when I bought it...I had pictures in a different thread but thought I'd give a refresher for those who havent seen it. I was told it had a knock...some knock huh?! LOL

Believe it or not the car actually ran. I was able to move it around under its own power till it was parked. It spewed oil but it did run....had one of those nifty "audible" tachometers!

I really need to get around to doing my aluminum cradle bushings....Is removing the sleeve a must for the aluminum bushings?

Nothing like the smell of burning rubber....smells like..like a suspension upgrade is taking place

------------------
87 GT - Poly dogbone, RD comp short shifter, Ultimate Getrag Shift Kit, No Cat, FS rear sway bar, full poly suspension, 11.25" Labaron Brakes, (solid cradle bushings 06')
95 Geo Prizm - Can't get out of it's own way..but waaaay reliable.

From what I have heard...and I'm not 100% on this.

West Coast Fiero's aluminum bushings require that the sleeves be removed, Rodney Dickmans supposedly slide into the old sleeves once the rubber is removed. I have WCF aluminum bushings...both the front and rear.

Reading my comment about Lance, I'm amazed. If I'm not paying attention when I lay a tool down I absolutely cannot remember where it is and yet I recall something 45 years ago. I think his mother was Barbara Hutton. He was heir to a cosmetics fortune. The Scarab was a Cobra type car.

lance reventlow 's mother , barbara hutton , was an heir to the woolwrths fortune.cary grant was one of lances step fathers(barbara was married 7 times) .lance was a very capable driver and team owner ,and raced just about everything including formula one.he built the scarab and it was the first american built F1 car.carrol shelby raced a scarab before he started building his own cars.
as for the cosmetic connection ,a lot of people confuse reventlow with peter revson ,another great american racer and heir to the revlon cosmetics family .lance died in a plane crash in 1972.i think peter is gone to but i am not sure.

My aluminum bushings did not require sleeve removal. I heated the inner sleve and removed it, then a combo of a hole saw and appropriate size forstner bit to get the rubber out. Then I had to use the dremel to sand a few spots around the sleves so the bushings would insert. Apparently, the sleeves aren't perfectly round.

In addition to Lance Reventlow's cars, there was another car that used the Scarab name. It was a small-block Chevrolet-powered Datsun 240/260/280Z.

Just cause the tech session ended on Saturday for you doesnt mean it did for me! Been working on it piece by piece all week. The cleaning of parts has been the real pain...soak, scrub, soak, scrub...prime, paint...repeat...ugh!

I'm also doing an engine swap, but am about 4-5 days behind you. So basically I'm looking into the future when I read this thread.

that's the one i remember. i've been wondering if pisa was thinking about this too, when they named that front facia they make scarab, seeing as it takes 300zx fog and turning lights, and goes on a fiero that could possibly have a small block in it.

HE used an Appliance Enamel. The same kind used on Washers/Ovens/Dryers. The stuff is tough, toughest paint I have ever run into. The Closest thing to Powder Coating in a rattle can. Since I lost my shop, Im going to use it on my front suspension when I get around to it.

Try to remember where everything goes once you take it off....heat shields etc.! I got into such a rush I forgot where most things went. Had to post another message on the board to figure out what went where! LOL

Ok...rainout tonight so all I could do was attach the heat shields to the cradle and clean...clean...clean...

I'm nearing the end of the cleaning stage though...finished up the last of the "parts to be painted", they are primed and will sit overnight to dry. The next few days will prove interesting as I try to figure out where everything goes! LOL

Here's tonight pic...my "mystery heat shields" have found their rightful place on the cradle.

Nothing got done tonight...had a softball game. However I do have a question for those of you out there...

Does anyone have pics of an engine mounted to the cradle that shows the brackets holding the engine and tranny to the cradle?

I have the last of my brackets getting painted and its about time to get them in their right places. My pictures didnt come out clear during the breakdown and now I'm stuck with out any reference. I could figure it out I'm sure but it always helps the have an assembled version to look at.

Thanks All!

I have the bracket installed on my engine. The engine is still on a stand, but at least you'll see how it goes on. Plus, I'll be putting the brackets on the tranny tomorrow. I'll take some photos for ya.

Thanks Blacktree...sounds like we are running neck and neck on this project! I'll keep any eye out for the pictures. Hopefully this weekend I can get the engine and tranny mounted to the cradle. Still need to clean out the engine bay so that may be my project during the week.
