I am working on refinishing the rims on my Indy. After striping the paint I need to polish the flange (area just inboard of the bead where the weights would clip on). Any suggestions on tools, techniques, products? I have never tried to do it before so I don’t necessarily know where to start or what to use. I have buffers, drills, air tools (die grinders, air drill, etc) so the drive mechanism is a given. The question is what to lock in the chucks? Cloth wheel, etc…? I am sure I will need some type of polishing compound.

You know all those fancy big trucks with the shiny fuel tanks and wheels? There are guys around the truck stops that do that. Fairly reasonably, too. You might try the service dept. at the local truck stop and also the big truck dealers.

They can put a mirror finish on aluminum.

You may want to wet/sand with 2000grit, to get out any imperfections first ---( if there are any) then come back with your polishing compound. Theres a product called CAM that works well, I think it stands for Chrome--Aluminum--Magnezeium --or how ever thats spelled. If you talking about the outer edge lip, probally safer to use it by hand. Have done alot of these with other products , by hand , and they come out chrome looking....

Thanks for all the help guys!! You do raise a good point, how shiny should the lip of the Indy wheel be? I doubt mirror, just smooth? Mine is OK, but a little cruddy/corroded so its hard to tell.
