To all of you that are interested in the 5-speed and 6-speed Trans, WCF has finished the project. We were lucky that the transmission we chose worked out so well. This transmission has better gear ratios, a stock proven LSD (Limited Slip Differential) and is also capable of shifting smoothly at a higher RPM and has a higher horsepower rating than any Fiero transmissions.
This transmission is 5” longer and some slight frame work on the Fiero will have to be cut to clear the trans.
The modifications we had to do to the WCF Transmission is to cut the bell housing to clear the starter nose and weld a cover for the starter nose. A few cooling fins also had to be cut off the bottom of the trans to clear the Fiero sub frame. We also had to notch the mounting bolt flange at the top of the bell housing on the new transmission to clear the GM mounting bolts on the new adapter; as the bolt pattern are close to the same. The transmission adapter was designed to mount the transmission to the GM bell housing and trans mount.
This transmission comes with a pull type clutch mechanism to release the clutch; this was changed to a push type clutch mechanism to accommodate the new clutch.
The flywheel is a stock 3800 without any modifications. The clutch is the same clutch
(9 11/16”) hat used on the new Shelby Cobra with the Olds Aurora engine. We need the extra overall height of the clutch to match the height of the throw out bearing in the transmission. This transmission can also accommodate a dual disk clutch for higher horsepower conversions with a lower pressure plate and machined flywheel.
This clutch set up also uses the stock 13/16 Fiero clutch slave cylinder. The throw out bearing fork and pivot are modified from another transmission to fit this trans. The throw out bearing sleeve on the trans had to be lengthened to accommodate the new type clutch throw out bearing.
The shift linkage on this transmission does work with the Fiero shifter and has about 2 thirds the throw of the stock Fiero trans.
With this transmission and engine combination, the engine sits about 1” higher than stock. The engine cradle can be cut to lower the engine and trans. We kept it 1” higher as to keep the axles leveled (straight) under power. One of reasons the axles can fail is when the axles are at an angle to the CV and Tri pod; this increases the load on the axles tremendously and this ultimately can cause axle failure. We kept the stock half-shaft and bearing using a modified engine bracket to support the bearing and half-shaft. New 4340 axles were manufactured to fit the new larger transmission inter tripod and the fiero CV. The inner CV bearing is replaced with a larger bearing from a 4T80-E transmission axle to accommodate larger diameter axles.
Engine mounts are in the stock fiero engine mounting position, as well as the rear trans mount location on the right side of the transmission to the sub frame. The front trans mount on the left side of the transmission and cross member is replaced with a new mount incorporated with the new trans adapter. This mounting arrangement will not need a dog bone to restrain the engine and transmission.

We have lots of pictures of the components and install coming soon. We are trimming the pictures now hope to have them out in a couple of days.

Everyone has been asking for pictures and write ups, so here you go! We finally got a bunch of stuff together to put on the website.

For those of you that have been looking for performance transmissions with no luck, well, WCF has FINALLY raised the bar and put together probably the highest performance of high performance transmissions.

Here's the pictures and the links if anyone cares... WCF has it one their webpage, but, for those of you interested, here's a direct link below!

Are you sure those were cooling fins you cut off and not structural reinforcement ribs for the case??? I have never heard of cooling fins on a manual transmission... Do you have before and after pics of what exactly you cut???

This transmission has cooling fines and internal oil pump to lube and cool the bearings and gears. The only reason we had to cut the fines were to clear the sub frame. The fins are over the top of the “A” arm so the sub frame can’t be cut to clear the fins with out a bunch of work.

Only Part of the lower frame is cut, the top half is still intact. Reinforcing the frame is no big deal. A 1.5x3’tube over the top of the frame or on the side will work. This part of the frame is in compression or tension when it is under load.

Wow! Very interesting. Don't know the worry of cutting the frame as many people have been doing it sometimes in both sides to accommodate V8s. But talking about V8 then this one will stick out another 1" with a V8 assuming a plate for it is built. I wonder if it still will fit.
