MAP stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor. It is used by the ECU to calculate engine load. That data is used to alter ignition timing and injector pulse width (fuel consumption).

The newer MAP sensors are more accurate than the older ones. This will mean the ECU gets better data and so can tune the A/F ratio better for better idle and drivability.

I can't help you on which vehicles have the newer sensors. I'm sure someone on this board knows.

Just out of curosity, I looked up map sensor for one of the V8 truck at gmpartsdirect.com. Its $37 from them and according to them it will work with almost all of gm's v8 and v6's from 95 up. Its not the same ms for the 3800SC though, which make sense if you think about it.

I think the newer map sensor is a must on a 3.4 swap since the motor is creating more vacuum now on a 2.8 intake (typically)

By the way, my goals for my next 3.4/3.5 are 180 rwhp. I'll probably start the parts buying process in 1 year. I get my license back Aug 26, 2006 so I want a running 3.4+ Fiero by then. I will dyno it and I may pay for custom tuning afterwards as well though my last a/f ratio showed I really didn't need it: 12.8:1 across the rpm range at WOT. However I guess I could squeeze a couple of extra ponies from a 13.1:1 ratio... I will use the TDC pistons and probably an aluminum flywheel....ported and shortened intake & TB. Ported and polished heads. Mustang injectors. I still won't bite on the Trueleo intake...I was happy with my last ported intake... I expect half my gains to come from the exhaust alone (2.5" this time). And yes, that is realistic.

ps,
I guess I was running the H260 cam then...on my 149.8rwhp motor. I don't know what the p/n of the Crane Compucam with .423/.423" lift is but that's what I was running on the Grooms 3.4 that clocked in at 146.3...

Sorry, but a 125 hp engine doesn't make 110-115 rwhp stock.

I totally agree with you. FRONT wheel drive cars typically lose about 15-20% of their horsepower through the drivetrain (from motor to wheels). Rear wheel drive cars typically lose up to 30%. Of course, I'm generalizing, but more specifically cars with TRANSVERSE setups (which is what we have) lose about 20% and logitudinally mounted motors lose 30%.

So a 20% loss from 140 is about 28hp, which comes out to exactly within your range of 110-115rwhp.

A lot of people have seen dynoed results of those numbers on stock Fieros...

Yeah maybe the "newer map sensor can help my hunting idle. Great information, especially with how tough the CA smog laws are now and what they will become soon.

Another thing that can cause a 'hunting idle' though rare, is a faulty MAT (Mass Air Temp) sensor. We went nuts for awhile trying to get a chip right for my car after some mods, only to watch the wideband constanly change at idle and listen to to the engine hunt. One minute it would be at 11-1 then go 14-1, back to 10-1 and then jump up the 17-1 or worse! After a few more chip burns we decided it had to be sensor related. When I cheched the MAT sensor impedance it was way off and not consistant either! I put a new one in (like $13) and presto 14-1 and steady. No more hunting.
