Regarding the timing, it's hard if not impossible to time the Fiero by "ear" because the ECM moves the timing around so much. For instance, at idle the ECM commands over 35° of advance, that's why you have to set the timing with the ignition module set in bypass by grounding the terminal in the ALDL. Most other cars have a connector that must be disconnected by the distributor, that connector is the EST signal wire.

The VECI is either wrong or damaged, no Fiero that I know of has ever had zero degrees of advance for the base setting. Setting it that way will reduce gas mileage and excessively heat the exhaust manifolds and catalytic converter.

I wanted to thank all who replied to this topic in regards to timing. My car had the same symptoms as GT-O-YA's but it turns out the previous owner of my car had the base timing set at around 5*ATDC. So I adjusted it to 10*BTDC like every other 2.8 factory Fiero should be and now it purrs like a kitten. Anyway, thanks to all for your help.

i know this is kinda O/T but it is a TD+Q none the less.... my girlfriend had an 86 firebird 305...everytime it starts itll stall out the first time till you give it quite a bit of gas...could it be timing? i thought it was the cold weather (carbed) but it is still doing it (new air filter, cleaned carb, new plugs+wires, cap+rotor) or could it be the CS switch??? does anyone know where this is on a 305?
sorry for different engine but very curious......
Jerry

First of all if you really hate your car that much, PUT IT UP FOR SALE. having a Fiero and working on cars should be a way to relex and have fun, if you get that stressed out over it, find a different car or something else to do...........
Now as for you problem, you don't say how many miles are on the car. And as for cash, you have tossed a lot of it in wrong places already. For the those people that say Injector of fuel problems, they are pointing you in the right direction.
When my car hit 96k i started to have some problems most of, if not all went away when i had the fuel injectors rebuilt.
Your problem is somewhere in the fuel system, incorrect pressure, bad / leaky or injector delivering incorretly

Don't expect new car reliability or hate a car which is performing poorly at 17 years old. Constant repair and maintence is usually required on a 17 year old vehicle. Face it, your Fiero is an OLD classic and requires lot's of TLC. For every hour that I drive my 87GT it seems to require 1 hour of maintenance. Things like belts, hoses, sensors, bushings, and the like were not made to last forever. If the expectation is to just put the keys in and drive; you've got the wrong vehicle.
With the description of your problem all we can do here on this post is to guess and make suggestions. To solve your problem you'll really need to do a full scan of the ECM and monitor it under all conditons of road load. That will pinpoint the problem. If you want to keep checking, a clogged CAT is often found to restrict the exhaust on a car as old as yours. If your exhaust is plugged the engine will run like crud.
