I found a few low mileage 4.9's at some of the local wrecking yards. I am intimidated by the wiring and have a few questions:

Can I get the same HP from the 4.9 with a carb as with FI?

Does anyone have a writeup on the whole procedure?

Will the 5 speed getrag in my 87 SE work well with this motor?

If not, can someone tell me what I need and some key points to the install.
Tomorrow I pickup a complete '88 cradle complete with the suspension intact. I will clean it up and get it ready for the new engine. It's getting close to crunch time, please help!

We did an 88 with a 4.9 and a 5 speed Getrag. Mechanically I found the install to be very straight forward. Now I will probably start a war with this. But I found the wiring to be very easy. We stayed with the Fuel Injection and kept all the Caddy emissions on the engine. By doing this all we had to do was identify which wire connect to the ECM and then make the harness fit in the car. I did do mine different then the other builds that I found on the forum in that I loomed the wiring harness together before we put the engine in the car. When we were done we had no electrical problems (maybe I just got lucky).

Good Luck

fierokings looked easy for him to do, but for me with only basic home tools and little know how...its a nightmare, but its what i want to do.

I totally agree with Joe on everything but the wiring part, To me, the wiring wasn't that easy. But i wouldn't say that it was hard either. (I hope i make sense)

The wiring just takes a good set of schematics, lots of patience and some time.

With the fuel injection you can use the popular 4t60e Tranny and not have to worry about a stupid TV cable to play with, I just like the aftermaket available for a carb hookup, I like all 4.9s being carb or fuel injection, I went with carb because I see potential in boasting this engine to run faster and stronger with some of the aftermarket carb acessories. (reasons why I never epoxied the old unused injector holes)

And living in florida there are no emmision laws

The difficulty on going carb or fuel injection are the same (If buy buy a plug and play wire harness)

The dist for the carb is very easy also it took me 45mins to make mine. but that's the only hard part to doing carb that I can see.
