I'm more or less doing a little Survey. What Brand Oil Filters, Part # and Weight/brand of oil are you guys using? On my 1987 Pontiac Fiero Coupe It for some reason doesn't make valve noises on the AC Delco Filters, while Purolators cause a rucus out back. Currently I have in it Exxon Superflo 10W30 and an AC Delco PF 52.

I run Mobil 1 synthetic, usually 10/30 year round (our temp doesn't go up/down that much here), and I run exclusively AC-Delco PF-52C oil filters. Longest ones that'll fit, best drainback valves, most surface filtration.

on all my v6 cars i use a napa or ac-delco filter, i get the one for the 91-96 chevy lumina minivan, or pontiac transport minivan or olds silluette minivan, they are twice the size of the fiero oil filter and same diameter. so it fits perfect and gets twice the filtering.

I use WIX. I get the filter for a blazer or camaro 2.8L. It is 2x larger than the size listed for v6 Fiero's and still fits. I wonder if it is the same size as the minivans mentioned earlier? I agree with Standard, after looking at test results, Fram is out. The worst was some brand called Mighty or something like that.

Since you asked for it, here's some highly useless data:
I use 5W-30 oil as the original owner's manual recommends. I ordinarily use Fram oil filters, probably because they're purty (bright orange) and easy to mark on with a magic marker; occasionally I'll use an AC filter.
Used a NAPA brand filter for my 1988 Coupe, because they had one available (filter in the pan kind). It was a long time before I actually changed oil, because I couldn't get the drain plug out (not the filter's fault, BTW).
I use AC Delco's or Napa Gold's (which are WIX). I've got a couple of K&N's but I haven't tried one yet.
Do the check valve test and make sure it will hold pressure on whatever type you buy. Many cheap filters won't hold any pressure.
I run Mobil 1 10-30W. I use Prolong but only as a pacifier.
If you are running synthetic, it's almost more important to change your filter than it is to change the oil. The color change that occurs doesn't really affect it's performance. Just keep the oil clean.

I forgot who makes it - it's that blue "Micron" oil filter. also, I get the 3.1 minivan one, which is 2x as long as the stubby little original one
just read that Oil Filter Study well, the "micron" blue one is the Purolator Pure One - which has the best filtration, but may be restritive - at least I'm using the double sized one - more surface area.... on my truck I use the Fram, which I guess is the $hittiest filter you can buy....well, thats the last Fram I ever buy
Also have used the Purolator Pure One when I cannot find a mobil filter. Only Advance stocks the Mobil 1 filters around here, and I use "stock" losely as they are usually sold out.

Interestingly enough, I also own a Firebird, and I was able to set up an online poll there, and the results are nearly the same so far.
My edit to the post is also that oil filter study was done by a 2.2L/2.5L Mopar fanatic. Granted we could do the same for our cars, but keep that in mind. Also, keep in mind that his study is also ongoing for 5 years or so now. keep the votes comming in, thanks guys (and gals!)

Nobody laugh- I like it: 2 qts Castrol 10-40 syntec (full synthetic) 1 quart Penzoil solid base 10-40 crap 1 qrt valvoline 10-40 conventional top off w/ castrol syntec blend. At least thats what I did on my last tuneup Purrs like a kitten (for now) OUT>

2 Fieros & 2 other cars all have oil changes every 2000 miles and filter changes every 4000 miles.
All filters were Deutsche until they were purchased by STP and are now STP.
For oil I use Shell Rotella-T 15W40. (On a side note, I started using Rotella a few years ago following a very long discussion with a chemical engineer working for Lubrizol. Lubrizol is the major manufacturer of additives for most of the oil industry. The chemical engineer convinced me that certain political and cost decisions in recent years have left consumers with very few brands of oil that contain the quality of friction reduction and antiwear additives that they should. In fact, the automotive industry signed off on the reduction of these additives in their oil recommendations to consumers.)

I'll probably get burned at the stake for this. knowing that we have so many "professional opinions" on this forum. but my pesonal favorite is FRAM. Why you ask well price of course. there is no need to spend money on something you will throw away after 3 to 5K miles anyway. I know all of us here don't miss a chance to change the oil on our cars regularly right. so whats the big deal? all it is, is a tin can with a paper filter.

I've used the Fram extra gaurd I think it was called. Almost $8 for the filter. I never had any problems with it. I can't seem to get to that site, it must be down. I usually buy the mobil 1 filters, unless they're out, thats when I get that fram one.

It is NOT my intent to have someone flamed for their choice in filters. I'm just looking for what the enthusiasts choice is. I appreciate all of your input, Fram or no Fram.
Personally, I ran purolator filters (the penske brand K-mart used to have) until I discovered the Delcos made a ton less noise on start up than the purolators.

Anyone else out there? I see lots of you looking, but staying silent... PM me if you are afraid of being flamed.
I'm just trying to set up an informal survey to see what the enthusiasts use versus what marketing schemes we hear. The Picture from ThirdGen.org is also updated as well Thanks!
Most always ran Fram SuperGards. Occasionally bought K&N's, but mostly Frams. Regardless mof the study (which I can't access right now), I've used them primarily on all my cars, from my '73 Camaro (no longer with us) to my wife's '86 Celebrity (also gone) and now '00 LeSabre, and I've never had a problem that could be traced to a poor filter. At least, rear ending a new Benz (The Camaro) can't be traced to that....
Oil is QuakerState partial synthetic 5W30 for the Fiero. The Buick gets the regular stuff.

Wix/NAPA Gold 1036 (the long ones) with Valvoline Durablend 10W-40 oil.
I wanted to switch to full synthetic (and still might) but when I did that in my Explorer with 120K on it the lifters went out. The engine was quiet with dino oil 10W-30 in it, then I went to Mobil 1 10W-30. The mechanic who helped me do it at work, explained that the synthetic oil was so slippery that it didn't provide the slippery mucus like oil that I usually ran. It wasn't the oils fault, but the engine had so much wear that the oil was literally too thin.

I have been using the Fram filter, but I might try something else next time. I've been hearing some weird engines noises, and I can't figure out what they are.

Ha opposite of what weve had. We used a Fram filter on the chevelle and its been great and no problems with it. When we did an oil change not too long ago the autoparts store was out of Fram so we had to go with the Purolator plus thing, suppose to be one of there best ones (he rated it very good) That f*ckin filter collapsed on us light a brick on top of a card house. we we put it on and started it up the first time it was good, the next time we started it the oil pressure was readin a little off, next time it was moving all around and the next we had to pressure at all. we immediatley took it off to find it was collapsed. We put a Fram back on it and oil pressure is back to normal.
I have a Delco filter on mine with Mobile 1 0-W30 oil with a can of Restore
