Back when I had a Starion with a turbo on it, the mechanics at all the dealers told me to NEVER use a fram filter, that it would cause the turbo to seize. They were seeing it happen constantly! I've never bought Fram anything since. Nice to see that they were telling the truth.

The ones for the 4 cyl. work on a v6 and are a longer style... The Pure One number is PL24011 according to their website under applications for 1984 Fiero 2.5L VIN R. You may need an extra 1/2 quart of oil to top off your system using this filter.
The AC Delco Number is a PF 52 if you want to cross reference it in the parts store.

I currently use Mobil 1 0W-30 and AC/Delco filters, PF-52. 87 2.5 SE. I used Valvoline 10W-40 in my original engine, a 2.5 with 150,000 or so on it, but it finally lost a connecting rod, unfortunately while it was running..... This is my second engine. I found a fantastic condition 2.5 with less than 40,000 0n it for $500, and changed to full synthetic after the first oil change. I don't want any oil related problems.

Although the data may be GM bias, I note that Fram filters came in second, but had many highly negative comments on its quality in PFF.
In my original post to this topic, I do try to use the AC brand (brand loyalty?), but if that was not available, I've used others with no adverse consequenses. I mean that if you are changing oil and filter at 3-4000 mile intervals, I don't see how a Fram filter would cause any damage unless installed incorrectly.
The report on your website is a nice touch. Well done.

I haven't seen much discussion on K&N oil filters here. I personally have only used AC Delco and Wix filters, but I'm curious to know about K&N. I understand that they are on par with Wix.
Any opinions?

To the best of my knowledge in researching the other sites, etc. I'm under the impression it's about the same thing as a Mobil 1 filter.
I do not have the hard data of capacity, flow ratings, and the like, but judging by what I've seen on various forums, the K&N is made by Champion Labs, like the Mobil 1 filter. The Mobil 1 is (according to Russ Kinze's filter study page) rated just under the PureOne by Purolator.
And Just to comment, Fram claims they are the number one cunsumer choice filter on their boxes. Granted I have a pretty small sample base, by and large, it's pretty close to #1.

I'd have to say Fram is the '#1 consumer choice' because it's cheap, and it's everywhere. Every store seems to carry Fram. Also the good marketing trick of bright orange boxes.
Have been using Fram filters and Quaker State 10W40. After reading te study I think I'll switch to AC filters. Like the Quaker State because it's so clear and I can see if it's getting dirty or if theres any other problem.Been using Frams for many years in a lot of different cars.Oh Well!

Well since I used to be a Pontiac dealer I am a bit biased. I only use AC DELCO PF52 on my car to be exact. I have used these for all my life and believe them to be the best made for GM cars specifically and other cars as well.
I prefer Valvoline oil as a petroleum based oil, but Mobil 1 for a synthetic.

I always use Hastings!! They are the makers of the amsoil filters. I cut a $12 amsoil filter open and a $4 hastings, and they were the same. Now I buy nothing but Hastings. Wix also makes good filters.
If Hastings is good enough for amsoil its good enough for me.

Guess Fram's marketing strategy sure works on me... I like the bright orange box and the bright orange filter. Maybe I'll switch to AC... too bad they're that boring GM blue color - I'll just have to paint them before I put them on! J/K .
Anyway, another bump to the top, and I have to ask - joedirt, are you by chance related to "Mr. Dirt," from the old Mobil detergent gasoline ads? J/K .

haha, no, but I know who you mean. Do you know where t find any of those old ads online anywhere? I've got a bunch of old Texaco Fire Cheif and Sinclair repo-signs, as wel as a bunch of old car ads from magazines in frames in my garage.
FYI, Joe Dirt was from a flop movie of I think 2 summers ago about an 80's metal head with a mullet trying to navigate life.

Got a brand new engine (fairly stock V6 with a hi volume oil pump.) Still got about 100 miles before it gets it's first oil change.
Break in oil is Walmart 10w30 with a Walmart oil filter. Been using this stuff for years in everything from a Datscum Diesel to a 4bolt main SBC in my Cheby Pickup. It works well and is cheap.
That said, the brand frikin new Fiero motor is gonna get an Wix (Napa Gold) filter and Chevron Supreme Synthetic 5w30.
I used to have a 76 Corolla (bought new) with 275,000 miles on the clock. All the oil after the warrenty expired was Mobil 1 and extended change intervals (15,000 to 20,000 miles) At 175,000 we did a tear down (time for a new timing chain and all new gaskets and seals), the cylinders were still showing hone swirls, bearings were all within factory specs.
Car lasted another 100,000 (and 8 years) before it was totalled in '89.

Personally I always try to use GM filters, but I have used Fram in the past, never had a problem. Normally use Valvoline or Rotella (Shell) 10/40 or 20/50, depending on the season's temp. Question though, has anyone ever used an additive called "Lucas"? I've heard very good things about this additive, but I don't normally use any thing like that. Happy Fieroing.

My personal favorite of those Mobil ads, was the musical one about "The Rocker Arm Assem-bal-ee" ("...and we don't like dirt!"). BTW, don't take the lyrics personally, joedirt, I don't think they meant you .
Don't know where to find those old ads (from the late '60s / early '70s, IIRC) online, but it'd be cool to see them again.

yeah yeah, those ones!! No offense taken. Every so often when speed channel was speedvision, they would show all sorts of amazing car ads. I'm still trying to figure out how they got that tiger under the hood for the GTO...
