Long overdue, IMO. I have low tolerance for bigotry, misogyny, and (now) libel. Stan claims that in the past he sustained a traumatic brain injury, and I believe that he is probably mentally ill as well; either might help explain his anti-social behavior, but neither excuses it. I truly hope Stan is able to receive (and accept) medical help, but it seems unlikely.

I have stated previously: I am probably less concerned about Stan than I am about the people here who applauded and cheered him on.[This message has been edited by Marvin McInnis (edited 06-11-2014).]

"Well, the Roman Coliseum would not have been the same without throwing the Christians to the lions or the Thursday gladiator fights. :
Meaning it seems to me the people here were watching Uhlanstans tirades just out of sheer curiosity, you know much like a train wreck.
Of course if Uhlanstan wrote this:
"Mary Jane I know you are a vet and a citizen of the USA, but I disagree with your viewpoint and I would like to discuss it with you on PFF..." just wouldn't have the "flavor" that we have come to expect from Uhlanstan.
and we wouldn't be filling the trash can on PFF with it either.

My bad. Thank you for that clarification Cliff .

Both (or either) absolutely excuse his behaviour as both are things that he didn't bring on himself. Both are involuntary and both (or either) could very well affect how he thinks and what he types even if he's otherwise a very nice guy.
I gave him a + specifically because one or the other of those could very well be the issue. (If you re-read his posts, you can tell that he wasn't "all there" for whatever reason.) My beloved grandmother died with both Alzheimers and dementia. In her younger and "better" years, she and I were very close (she and my grandfather basically raised me). In her declining years, she said some things that were very "harsh". I know she didn't mean to say them and probably had no idea at the time that what she said was hurtful. I didn't stop loving my Grandma because she said what she did nor do I have any hard feelings for Stan because of what he's posted in case dementia, Alzheimers, a "traumatic brain injury" or mental illness is a factor. If he was just being a dick (like WD88 was), that would be different. Do you think he woke up one day and said, "Hmmm. I wonder what it would be like to have my melon tossed?"? Or maybe he thought, "I'd sure like to have schizophrenia today."? EVERYONE has their own issues including me. (I think they mention my name specifically on a few pages of the DSM5.) I have OCD, depression, ADD and the possibility of slight Aspergers (as well as quite a few others). Would you hate me because some or any of those manifested themselves on PFF? Maryjane (aka Don) seems to be a very strong guy. Since he knows he's not a traitor (I'm assuming), he can stand up for himself if he chooses. The fight (if there was to be one) should have been between him and Stan (with the help of Cliff if needed to delete the thread or drag it here in the trashcan).
Giving him a - to keep him from posting those sorts of rantings (as a last resort and because nothing else worked) is one thing. To give him a - just because you didn't like what he said AND KNOWING/THINKING THAT IT MIGHT NOT BE HIS FAULT is wrong. It's a little late but show some compassion.
Anyone who was aware of any mental defects or illness and STILL did their part in banning Stan should be ashamed of themselves. Again, show some compassion. If I have missed something, I apologize.
Marvin, you've always seemed to be a stand up, level headed guy. I hope you remain that way. FWIW, the only rating I've given in this entire thread was the + to Stan. I have not given any -s to anyone else.
I think people are too quick to judge. How does that saying go? Those who live in glass houses....? I'll get off my soapbox now and go count my new negatives.[This message has been edited by Monkeyman (edited 06-10-2014).]

Too quick??!!!
Stan had more than seven years here to spew his special brand of hatred. I don't care what his excuse was... enough is enough.

So, if you develop a mental illness or get in a car wreck and crack your melon, should we just give you the boot? Or should we try to find some other avenue? I was never offended by Stans posts (although I stopped reading most of them a while ago) but if you were truely offended, did you send him a PM asking what the problem was? Did you contact Cliff asking if there was anything he could do? Maybe a PM from Cliff to Stan and a short (temporary) ban would have helped.
Maybe there's nothing more wrong with Stan than hatred and a mixed up childhood. If so, good riddance. But, if you read his posts, he very obviously came across as having some deeper issues. Maybe the reason his hatred has a "special brand" is because of something beyond his control. I hope you wouldn't crucify someone for something they couldn't control.

The rants from Stan may have been a result of personal issues (injury, mental disorder, whatever...) but in that case that would be a cause, not an excuse. Hatred to that level should not be tolerated.
