What Did I Get Myself Into ? Medical. (Page 1/7)

What the hell is a bone growth stimulator, more to the point, how does it work ?

A little over a year ago, I broke my arm. After bone doctor's care, it never healed right. My second doctor, a sports rehab doctor would not even rehab me, deferred me to a specialist. My predicament was beyond his realm. He deferred me to another specialist. One who could re-break my arm and surgically re-attach it. Sort of like a mechanical arm.

I have know of some who had hip replacements, knee replacements, some with back surgery. Click to show Those don't always end up well, sometimes worse, but the damage is done.

Here is my question. I opted for a "bone growth stimulator". The damn thing cost $3,000+, my co pay is $500. I have three days to back out of my contract. I was not told this but I know that.

What the hell is a bone growth stimulator, more to the point, how does it work ? Upon receipt of it I was told it sends, ... electronic waves through my arm. I asked how it knows where exactly those signals know where to be sent. Would all surrounding bones "growth" ? "Not to worry" was the answer.

Did you try rubbing some snake oil on it?

Some healing crystals might be cheaper?

So Cliff (W) it's obvious that you are in contact with the medical community. There's this, and the Covid that affected your wife--and you also? I don't quite remember it that sharply, what you said about it here. I think you said you were diagnosed with Covid.

I'm just suggesting that maybe you could put these other questions that you expressed today or yesterday about Covid (etc.) to the same medical practitioners that you have been seeing. That message where you put all the brief and sometimes contradictory statements from Dr Fauci.

A NIOSH-certified N95 respirator (face mask) without any kind of valve is what I perceive as the "gold standard" for Covid protection and I don't think they are hard to locate and purchase online. I don't think it would cost you an "arm and a leg." I have some. I have taken a suggestion that I've seen online, which is to reuse it as long as there is no visible deterioration or soiling of it. That may not be the best practice. But I have had the first dose of Moderna. Just a couple off weeks ago. No particular side effects. A little sensitivity around the injection site for a day or two. Nothing more than that. I expect the second dose will be harder on me.

Next one down, a KN95 respirator mask. Then the simple surgical-style masks that are most commonly seen.

What's come out now (courtesy of MEM) is to avoid any mask that has graphene in it.

I know a lady.......... Oh, never mind. Different topic. Thought you said something else.

Like any device it has parameters that need to be maintained. if it gets out side of those it could work in unexpected ways.
You could end up with an extra thick bone or it could just not be effective at all.

Do not stick your dick in it, contrary to what you hear on the internet it is not a bone.

I think I am doing that now. I have been rubbing beer on it, from the inside out, .

Thank you for your input, . You must have missed the part where I said I have been to four different doctors. Neither a Kung Flu doctor. My wife was diagnosed with Kung Flu. We maritially , not socially distanced, had very close contact, in the same house, in the same bed. Very close. I never got the Kung Flu, never wore a mask. Covid is not an STD.

Truth be told, I only wore a mask as so not to get infected and infect her. I would not be able to face myself, nor her family. Go figure, , she got infected and I did not.

"bone growth stimulator", from a non medical regualr person's 1st take, seems like what you'd want to try and get a broken bone to grow back together.

2.5 is right. It stimulates bone growth electrically. My brother had three discs in his lower back that were completely worn away. He went to Hamilton to the sports orthopedic clinic that is connected to Colgate University. The doc put plastic spacers between the vertebrae and scraped the bone and told him how many hours a day to use the stimulator. It caused the bones to fuse to one another. He lost some mobility, but is basically pain free. that was three years ago. I say give it a go.
God luck

The electro stim is intended to speed up the process of osteogenesis (natural growth of trabecular and cortical bone).

Your bone in your arm failing to heal properly is called pseudoarthrosis or a "failed fusion" or "non-union", so the electro stim is a prophylactic measure to help speed the recalcification process and try to mitigate another pseudoarthrosis.

Implanted versions of the stimulator do have a 6 to 12 month life as regulated by the FDA and must be removed and replaced, (called a "revision") if necessary however most bone osteogenesis is complete in humans within 9 months or less.

Generally, patients who have a had a previous pseudoarthrosis, patients who smoke, patients with severe diabetes, patients with compromised vascular blood flow and patients with certain genetic bone diseases are prime candidates for electro stim therapy.

The newest therapy for healing fractures quicker involves the use of hyaluronic acid and deferoxamine into the fracture via an implantable, drug eluting, delivery device that is made if biocompatible polyethylene plastic.

You may or may not care, but that term “Kung flu” is offensive, and similar attitudes have resulted in a dramatic rise in violence against Asian Americans.
