About four years ago, I posted an Adam Neely video that suggested that our musical tastes are pretty much fixed by the time we are in our early teens. It seems the video has been made “private”, but here is a link to the thread: https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum6/HTML/122907.html
Adam made a compelling argument that the pop music that we listened to at that particular developmental stage will shape our preferences for the rest of our lives. So, each successive generation will always reject that which follows.
I have posted probably about a half dozen Adam Neely videos here over the years. Some were sufficiently esoteric as to be completely ignored while others provoked an inexplicable degree of anger.

I see two peaks of creativity in the 20th century, the '30s and the '60s. I also think that we are in another peak right now. I waited a long time to hear it, but it is here, now.
Of course each of those decades saw the explosion of an underground rumble that was just below the surface in the decade that preceded it. From a cultural/anthropological perspective, it is my long held belief that great art emerges from great strife.

This was the first "Leo" video I ever saw. Some of you will like it. Mary (above) and his daughter appear frequently in his/her/their videos. Not a bad way to make a living.

I assume by 'schtick' you mean gimmick. I have seen (not always in person) Clapton, Carlos Santana, Van Halen, Knopfler Hendrix, SRV, Jimmy Page, and a host of other very talented guitarists. Their 'schtick' appears to simply be ............................................raw talent.
How about you Williegoat... When you play, do you feel compelled to use facial expressions reminiscent of trying to poop a whole watermelon out your ass?[This message has been edited by maryjane (edited 11-14-2022).]

I hooked a GoPro to the end of my clarinet once. I deleted the video immediately.
Hiromi Uehara and her bass player, Anthony Jackson are both entertaining to watch as well as being extremely talented. But I think they might be from another planet.
The drummer looks human, but he could be an octopus, I don't know.[This message has been edited by williegoat (edited 11-14-2022).]

Sure, those guys are all great guitarists, but it's also possible one or more of them couldn't tie their own shoelaces. Why are you pigeonholing Leo in that one box... guitarist? He does so much more!

Leo does the "heavy metal" musical arrangement for all the songs he covers, plays all the instruments, records and mixes the audio tracks, shoots and edits all the video... it's a ton of work... and he does a superb job of it.
Different strokes for different folks. Not everyone has to like what he presents.

And yes, he acts like a clown. So what! Are you suggesting no one else has earned a living over the years/decades/centuries acting the fool?

Here's a video just for Don. There are musical lunatics everywhere... even in Texas.
Please don't make me hit the archives and post a Victor Borge video. [This message has been edited by Patrick (edited 11-15-2022).]

I was composing a similar opinion, just as maryjane was posting the above.

Patrick is conflating two different forms of entertainment.

That was the point of my comment regarding the video in my original post:
| quote | | You know, with the exception of Stravinsky, the criticism was more about the act. One hundred years from now, when the conversation turns to music, only two of those five will be remembered for their music: Igor Stravinsky and Bob Dylan. Sure, Elvis had a great voice and Black Sabbath explored dark modality, but Madonna was absolutely vapid. None of the three will be remembered for their music. They will be remembered (if at all) for the show, the act. |
|
Now, don't confuse my observation with a critical indictment of the content of the video. The point of the video was that a critique is just that, nothing more or less. It is a perspective from a specific point in time, from a specific cultural vantage.
Spike Jones was the Weird Al of his time. Neither will ever be compared to George Harrison or Mike Bloomfield. No one will ever discuss Elvis or Madonna in the same way as Larry Coryell or Bela Fleck.

A talented group of musicians, focused on comedy, that few remember. But everyone who was around back then will remember the Tijuana Brass.[This message has been edited by williegoat (edited 11-15-2022).]
