1984 Fiero SE Project Restore (Page 1/3)
Brivander NOV 28, 11:48 AM
Hi guys, new to the forum, but been lurking since I picked up an 84' SE about a week ago and have been working on it. I've searched the hell out of the forums but still have a few questions. Car is in very nice shape, but also had a lot of small issues to sort out.

To Do List:
- Horn - is this a common problem? Yes the fuse is good.
- Temp Gauge - Works but reads low ~130 at full temp. I assumed the thermostat was hung open, but boiled it and it starts to open ~190. Seems right.
- Idles about 1800rpm until it warms up??? - May be normal, but new to the Fiero. Idles around 1000rpm in neutral once warm.
- New tires are here, need to be mounted and balanced - Riken Raptor (Michelin) 215/60R14.
- Rubber trim around the shifter / center console is popped out on passenger side, looks like multiple attempts have been made to fix it.
- Brake Pull Left under braking -- need to bleed brakes first, then decide what to do.

Fixed list:
- Interior Lights (dash, overhead, radio) INOP - replaced a blown fuse and rewired the 4th grade science project that was going on behind the fuse panel.
- Power Mirrors Cigarette lighter INOP - fixed with wiring repair.
- Sticky Door Locks - cleaned and lubed the mechanisms.
- Cruise Control INOP - Re soldered and wrapped the broken wires in the stalk (still need to test when weather clears).
- New wiper blades installed
- Blown front Speakers - replaced with Cerwin Vega 4x10's -- pretty awesome for about $50!!!
- Radiator electric fan INOP - hardwired and installed a switch.

Any guidance appreciated!!!

Welcome, car looks great!

-Very common, most likely bad grounds from mounting brackets to frame, clean and re-test, car has 2 horns
-Vacuum bleed cooling system and re-test, replace gauge sensor (84 has 3 temp sensors/senders, thermostat housing is for computer, sticking up out of head is for the gauge, sticking out of head towards driver is for the radiator fan)
-My 84 did this on both engines, I'd say normal
-Where the heck did you find those? All I can find in the original size is Radial T/A's
-Also common, gorilla glue and clamps. DO NOT apply clamps directly to vinyl, they will leave an indentation

Recommend replacing cigar lighter socket with new, and fixing radiator fan properly. The 84 SE uses a one-year-only 2 speed fan, can convert to later style 1 speed. Definitely buy an 84 Shop Manual if you haven't already.

I do have the manual. Car came with all of the original paperwork, pretty sweet. I will fix things right, but wanted to get things at least functioning. The fan I was mostly hard wiring to see if it even worked. Once I did that I thought, may as well switch it until I get time to do it right.

Did some more digging on the horn. Relay wasn't clicking, so I replaced with a known good relay, nothing. So the grounds / horns may be bad, but I have an issue upstream that needs to be solved before I work my way downstream.

Time to pull it apart.....

Just straight 12v to the horn will test it.

The horn BUTTON may be the source of your problem; The center cover/horn pad pops off and then there is a lttle spring loaded thing that does the work....May need to be cleaned, may have a dead spring.....Here is link to a thread on "Fixing the horn";

Yup, already found this, I’ll get to it tomorrow. I have a long winter ahead of me, so I have time to get it right. Pulled off the console trim and have that gluing overnight.

I also found the Delorean horn thread, if it turns out the horns are bad as well, I’m doing those!

I’ll keep plugging away when work isn’t getting in the way

I also have a Veloster....my wife would chuckle at the roadrunner horn that was on the car every time I locked it.
Quick trip to the junkyard fixed that. I just pulled a trailblazer horn which is an all in one Hi and Lo tone horn.
Fixed her right up :-)
Its actually pretty funny when I use it. More than once folks are looking around for where the horn came from...expecting a truck no doubt.

Update, horn works, plunger was installed wrong.

I’ll test the cruise when it dries up.
