88 rear bumper parts removal (Page 1/2)

Will probably have our 88 rear bumper cover repainted. Plan to remove reflectors & Pontiac emblem to make prep & paint easier & better. 1. Will standard speed nuts from McMaster work ok on the reflector posts or is something special needed? 2. Any tips on how to remove the Pontiac emblem? Doesn’t have any visible speednut. Thanks.

I was able to remove the reflector's speed nuts by gently prying up alternating tabs with a small flathead, then using two larger ones to pry the assembly as a whole up the plastic shaft. The plastic shaft is just a long cone, so if your speed nuts are rusty or cracked, then, yeah, a regular one with hex drive will screw down onto it. Oughta be able to get those from your local car parts place in a little "Help!" or Motormite packet from Dorman, don't even have to McMaster them.

I donno about the logo as my particular bumper (remember, there's different ones by year and model) just has "Pontiac" molded in.

If this is a nothcback (only model I know that says pontiac in the bumper) it is engraved in the bumper itself. There is no way to take it off, but could be filled in with some body fuller.

Of coarse the earlier years could be just stuck on there.

The Pontiac emblem on the 88 bumpers is speed nut + double back taped on. you can get replacement at TFS.

Thanks for the hint about the speed clips. I hadn’t thought about the cone shape making it easier to walk off the clips.

As for the Pontiac emblem, I know about the molded-in letters. But the 88’s definitely have clip-ons. I’m going to try to post some pics but may not be able to, as I don’t have many posts under my belt.

Have you tried simply pushing on the end of those nubs? Do it gently at first, just to make sure someone hasn't glued the emblem to the rear bumper cover.

Re TFS emblem: I found an earlier post that mentioned that. However, their web site doesn’t list it. I’ll try to contact them tomorrow and ask.

Unfortunately, they're rather lousy quality.

I think you'll find that the "chrome" on the face of that PONTIAC emblem will be coming off easier than the residue you're trying to remove. That was my experience with this Fiero Store emblem anyway. Had to repaint the letters with silver paint within two years.

I haven’t tried to push on the nubs. With the number of cautions about other 30+ year old plastic clips on these cars, I try to remember to ask first before doing anything. Another reply says they were speed clips & tape, so maybe that’s what I’m up against. Thanks.
