Clutch pedal reinstall nightmare... (Page 1/1)
CSM842M4 JUN 01, 10:39 PM
Got a fresh clutch master cylinder for the wife's '84 4-speed, and while removing the old unit, noticed that the pushrod "banjo" had nearly worn the pedal pin in two. Got the pedal and the outer part of the pedal bracket out, welded up the pin, andI tried to reinstall today. I quit before my loss of patience caused something to get broken. Then I remembered this forum, full of enthusiasts with all kinds of experience. So now I seek the advice of the more practiced at this process; is there a trick to getting everything back together? A magic sequence of events? Any advice/input is greatly appreciated - thanks in advance - Chris

I've read on here that if you loosen (not remove) the bolts that hold that whole cluster to the, for lack of a better word, bulkhead you can move things around easier....

Thanks, FX. I'll give that a try. It looks like the pedal and outer bracket are going to have to go in at the same time, but I think I'm going to try loose-mounting the bracket by itself, then fishing the pedal in. Just once. Knowing it may not work. Unless there is any other sage advice born of experience... I'll post results as soon as they're available. Thanks again - Chris

This is why my automatic still has a clutch pedal and master cylinder.I left them in when I did my swap to auto, if it was ever to be changed back.

The search function here works pretty good. I found an old thread for you that has everything you need to know.

Clutch Pedal Replacement

Thanks, herc' and Patrick. Last night, I stuck the master cylinder studs on the bracket through the "firewall" and loose-nutted them. Then I offered the pedal up, wrestled the spring into place, and after a little prying, shoving and whining, the pedal is hanging on the pivot bolt. Yay! All that's left is to work the outer pedal pivot bushing into place, push the pivot bolt the rest of the way through, put the small 8mm bolts in and install the new master cylinder ( the original object of this whole exercise!). What an adventure this has been. I'll post again with any more missteps and/or a brief success story. Thanks again - Chris

I will scrap another manual car before doing the clutch pedal... but, I did it on a car I was selling, in July, it was 97F and the carpet stunk to high heaven. Probably would have been easier to pull the seat so I could lay upside down...

After you've done a couple, it's not hard to swap manual pedal sets for auto pedal sets and visaversa.

Well, after pulling the driver's seat and hanging the pedal first, then the bracket, the job is nearly done! Just need to fill and bleed the system and test-drive. Not a project I want to repeat every weekend, but... On the plus side, I think I cameto up with some inventive ways to string dirty words together in the process. Thanks again for all the input. 'Til next time - Chris
