Getrag 5 speed oil fill (Page 1/3)
FX MAY 08, 02:30 PM
I just read somewhere on here of maybe an overflow plug on the side of my 86 GT 5 speed, but I cant find it again (sometimes I get that way) . I think it was one of my posts too...

I suspect that the po has too much oil in it. It does have a dip stick, and the level reads way above the full mark. Some of you might remember that I asked if it is checked by screwing it all the way in, or not, there is about an inch difference. Is there a plug on the side of the Getrag to take out, like a cars differential? Can I just pull that plug to see if it is indeed overfull, and just let the excess flow out?...Or will I have to completely drain it, and fill with the right amount?

I don't think there is a side plug. You'll have to drain out the excess, check dip stick, repeat as needed.

As I recall a picture I saw referring to a drain/fill plug, it was just a bolt that was horizontally on the same level as the full level on the dipstick. My impression is that it wasn't actually put there for that purpose.

Just as a note, the fill level is indicated in capacity charts as 2.7 quarts. I just replaced an axle and seal on my 87GT and at the same time drained and replaced my Synchromesh fluid. The dipstick showed over-full at 2.5 quarts. I left it at that and have driven it a couple hundred miles. It still shows over-full. It seems to be OK because nothing is coming out the breather or the axle seals.

Okay guys, thanks. At this point I'll just drain it and refill it with prescribed amount. No telling how long that oil has been in there either. It's a win win ...I'll start with two quarts, and take it from there. It does take Synchromesh oil, right? I still don't know if it is checked with the dip stick screwed in or out to check...Does anybody know for sure? As I said, there's an inch difference...

The dipstick works just like the engine dipstick works. Inserted all the way in. If it has the little nylon tab underneath it that has 5 w 30 on it, that should be in place, too. It's a little difficult to get an accurate reading because the dipstick goes in at an angle. I have a tendency to insert it more downward which put the dipstick deeper into the fluid and when trying to get the threads to grab, it can tip more downward. And yes, Synchromesh was recommended in later TSB's.

Edit: I just remembered that some VSS's have a hot and cold fluid level mark on them and the VSS goes in vertically. You just have to be extremely careful when removing it so that you don't pop the gear and have it fall into the transmission. Once I have the VSS out, I remove the gear, wipe the fluid from the shaft and check. Then I put the gear back on when the fluid level is correct and insert the VSS.

No VSS involved with this one Fierofool. It just has a screw-in dip stick.

I have read that if you have certain problems- including noises- from your Getrag, to add a bit more Fluid.....So I don't think it is Ultra-critical how much- Has a capacity of 1.9 quarts...I just put in the 2 full quarts.......But definitely use the GM Synchromesh fluid- It improved the shift action on mine a lot!

If you have a Fiero with a manual transmission you have a VSS. Variable Speed Sensor. It's the cylindrical object to the right of the dipstick with a harness plugged into it.

Here's an archived thread that describes the location of the filler plug on the side.

On the HM282 there's a drain plug near the bottom, and another plug on the side. But I don't think it's meant as a full oil indicator. The dipstick serves that purpose.

EDIT TO ADD: Just checked the HM282 service manual, and the side plug is labeled as a fill plug. But the manual says to use the dipstick for checking / adjusting fluid level. Clear as mud, right?

You can reach into the dipstick hole with a turkey baster and suck out some oil. Keep going until the oil reaches the full mark for hot or cold, depending on the gearbox's temperature. Also make sure the car is parked on level ground.
