keeping everything as light as possible makes a huge difference in how the Fiero feels and performs......I have 16 x 7 VOXX wheels that are 13.5 lbs each, and I have been going with General G-Max AS-03 tires which are actually lighter than most tires (At least in my sizes). They now have a better, updated version, AS-05s......
My tire sizes are 205/55 front and 225/55 rear....The rears are slightly bigger in diameter than stock GT tires- My Getrag trany w/GT speed sensor is absolutely right on the nose accurate. I picked these tire sizes because they were on several popular cars so a number of companies are still making them in decent performing rubber....
My VOXX Monzas are no longer being manufactured but there are a number of other wheel options in 16 x 7.......You can get 16 x 7 wheels that weigh up to 20 lbs.....To give you an idea of just the performance difference wheel weight can have. 40 lbs off your wheel/tire package would be like taking 200 lbs off the car. (And then you also get better feel and ride)
If you go to 17s, it becomes harder to keep weights down......although you can then get slightly higher performance tires....Remember, the lowest performing tires today would out-perform the best tires you could buy back in the 80s.....

For an 87, you're pretty safe buying anything that will fit on a Volkswagen New Beetle. If I had to specify a size, it would be 17x7 - 17x8, with a 35mm offset. If you want to stagger tire sizes, use 215/45-17 on the front, and 235/45-17 on the rear. If you want to be able to rotate them, use 225/45-17s on all 4 corners.
Of course, you can go for 18s, too - or even larger. Or stagger the diameters. But 17s seem to be the best trade off for handling and ride quality.
