Hello all. So over the weekend I rolled my beloved '88 Formula (209,000 miles) into the shop to begin a restoration project. The project will include but not be limited to new paint, interior mods, 3.5L swap. I am pretty clear on what direction I will be taking with the car except for one area. The transaxle. With the high miles (don't be fooled by the odometer as the car is in fantastic shape..I just love driving it!) I would like to address it one way or the other. What I am looking for are options. Do I...
1) Have a shop rebuild the existing Getrag. This is assuming that there are parts available. 2) Find a used Getrag with lower milage. 3) Update to a newer transaxle. Is this an option??
Frankly, the car shifts just fine as it is but with a new motor I would really like to update the drivetrain to match the fresh engine.
Thanks guys, Pal

Hey Pal....
Visit Rodney Dickman's site to see about adapting newer Getrags, and.....
Do a search for F23
I am partial to the original 282 Getrag, but a few parts are getting tough to find, esp. input bearing and the output bearings. If yours are in good shape, saving it is a possibility.

You don't necessarily need all new parts... you can get some more Getrags and mix and match the best of each to get a good result, supplemented by some brand-new parts.
What I did for my Fiero's transmission was I obtained 3 complete Muncies, some new parts, and I assembled a decent trans from those ingredients.

Not trying to get off topic, but what 3.5l engine are you using?

Rebuild kits and labor can be very pricey. Finding another Getrag (or F23) is your better option.
Here's what other FWD Getrags can work and Rodney has the parts to do so. http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum9/HTML/000038.html

I'm using an F23 behind my 85 SE with a 3500 swap. needs custom mounts, shift linkage, and probably shift cables, I haven't driven it much, but it shifted nice. ------------------ "I am not what you so glibly call to be a civilized man. Sorry, I fat fingered it. 3.4L pushrod. Thanks for the information guys. I started the project yesterday removing body panels to be painted. Soon the motor/trans will be pulled!
