You think it will cost less to employ all those and provide all the facilities to amass and distribute that food? When has the government ever done anything that is cheaper than private industries?

It would be a lot harder to sell cheese blocks for half price and use the funds to buy smokes, that's for sure.

No but, if they can go to a store and use their food stamps, or go to sell them to the local drug dealer, they can go pick up their own food basket. At the same said store. The drug dealer will not be wanting to trade drugs, or trade two dollars of food stamps for one dollar of his cash, just to be able to get maccaroni and cheese, cereal, powdered milk, MRE's.

We fed the needy. That was the complaint, right ?

Then have law enforcement and case workers do their jobs and go after the abusers both card holder and receiver. I assume since you say these abuses exist that you have witnessed them? Did you notify law enforcement? If you heard it by word of mouth, did the witness contact law enforcement?

Yes the first answer is always and should be, enforce current laws.

The caveat = "good luck with that"

The thing is many case workers likely would not personally benefit from stopping the abuse.

Many may joke or don't believe new food programs won't be sold but only fooling themselves...
Many don't know that NY state and others gave away cheese, dry milk, and butter years ago to "food stamper" and others and had many problems. (May still do for schools etc.) Start at Government cheese @ wiki
NYS gave away 5# -10# blocks of Land-o-Lakes cheese made for Govmnt food programs and school lunch programs was very good and melts very well too. Many would buy them because Gov cheese is/was better then most brick cheese on the market like Velveeta. IOW Gov Cheese and many others are often better and sell easy.

Now is no different. Try to buy 5# to 10# brick at retail or even wholesale you find cost a lot of money even for "cheap" brands. Just an 1# brick of Velveeta cost $5 even at Walmart. Foodservicedirect.com sell 4 5# bricks for $100 plus $40 shipping. I bet SYSCO et al are high too even for big institutional orders.
Can sell Govmnt cheese 1/2 or more of that price and make enough money to matter to most people.

So If they do any Govrmnt food distributions now... I won't be surprise to find the food will be sold even at flea markets.

Paper Food Stamps were abuse before that. EBT card was supposed to fight this.
Both cover a lot of "junk" foods.
Both are "sold" to buy drugs and booze.
Because:
Almost No Stores check ID when they take EBT cards. Same problem w/ Paper FS before that. Too much time to check. Many stores w/ beer/wine barely looks at ID too.
Many stores have problems and don't care if you buy whatever paid w/ EBT.

Related note: Most "Food Banks" have a lot of "junk" foods too. Example: Many chip makers etc give away mix bags and bags w/ weight problems to food banks. Mix AKA "Mystery" bags happen when they change flavors say like sour cream to BBQ. So You getting BBQ bag at FB can have any flavor chip inside. Any packages failed to meet weight printed on them can't be sold but can give to FB. Packages near at or over the "Sell By" date are often given to FB too because Most foods are good months to years after the data on the packages. The company likely gets a big tax deduction doing this too.

Yeh... right... not.
Have You ever called LEO for a store for EBT violations or selling booze and smokes w/ ID problems? Unlikely.
I have friends does and even sends stories to local news outlets to try to get DA off their ass w/ little results.
If LEO even files your complaint, can take months to years for them to check out the store.
Often Only times they check is only when a DA etc whats easy Press to get reelected.
Even then Very rarely LEO/DA does anything but fine the owners and most owners fight even that saying "bad employees" cause the problems and other bs. In the ends nothing happens except maybe a slap on the wrist.

its real easy to understand. Living in a downtown core, I see it every day.

They take the welfare money and go buy drugs.

THEN, to feed themselves, use food banks and free community meals.

SEE ? They really CAN have it both ways )

Ya know...I tried to hire a couple of them to help move some stuff (old couch and a couple dressers) on the weekend. 50 bucks for 10 minutes work.

Wanna guess how many takers I got ? Yeh, about that many. I went and got a buddy and we did it ourselves even though I didnt have the time, and are using the $50 for pizza and beer next weekend.
