A member here has a slight fetish for the VW Van. I had a 65 VW Beetle "Baja Bug". My Brother also had a regular Beetle. I am an aficionado of the "Peoples Car" that Hitler championed. I once saw a stretched VW camper van (flip up canvas top) across the street of my home. A gentleman visiting a Christian single lady across the street. He slept in it for about a week. I was able to get a "tour" and it was well done.

I thought I would start a thread about VW's. Mostly viewing.

Here is a stretched one I found on line. It started as a rare model because it had windows just below the roof.

Hey Cliff, I totally missed this thread.

We have a Bus (not sure if I was the one that was the bus fenatic... haha). We love our VW.

It's a 1973 VW Transporter (Bus), which was at the time called a "Deluxe Bus." It was originally used at the Pompano Beach Airport (smaller regional airport). It was used as a shuttle bus to ferry passengers back and forth to their Learjets and smaller airplanes. It was used until the late 70s, and then an airport mechanic bought it in the late 70s, and used it as his own vehicle to haul tools to and from each terminal. THEN some kids owned it, and smoked pot in it, cooked meth, whatever... (yeah, I found some stuff in it), and then MY friend bought it in 2001. He got a new paint job, had the engine rebuilt... tried re-installing the windshield, cracked it... and then got so upset that he gave up and put it in storage. I bought it off him for $1,200 bucks in this condition:

No tail lights or headlights, half the windows missing, and the interior totally gutted. At the time, you'd still see these Busses end up in the local junkyard, so I was able to get a new windshield and other things. As you know, I took a job in 2011 that required me to move all over... so I ended up putting it in storage at that same time (2011) when it looked like this:

Right now, the tires are flat, need to be replaced. The fuel is shot, and while the engine is decent, I'm probably going to rebuild it again. It's an 1800cc motor, and I have a Porsche 914 2000cc motor (also from the junkyard) that I'll rebuild and install in place of that (it'll give me a bit more horsepower and a higher top speed). The manual transmission also has no synchros, so I'll probably rebuild that as well. But the interior is pretty decent at this point...

I do like these busses, but damn are they slow. I almost think they'd be perfect for an EV conversion.

Yes Todd, you was the fanatic I was referencing.

Slow ?

My Wife is not happy that I bought another Fiero. I understand. I told her my last one (88 GT T Top) would be the last one I would buy. What will she think when I tell her I found a VW Van that I want to buy.
