What? You didn't know that the famed boy king of ancient Egypt, Tutankhamun, or "King Tut" as so many have known him, perished during a chariot race, when he lost control or collided with another chariot, and sustained injuries that ultimately proved fatal for him?

Actually, that's also just suspected: a fatal chariot accident is a theory that's been entertained by some Egyptology boffins since 2013. But the DUI "angle" is new. Forensic Egyptologist Sofia Aziz has newly added the intoxicant of wine to the chariot crash theory.

She bases this conjecture on what she describes as the "robust" collection of wine that was discovered among his tomb artifacts, when his miraculously intact tomb was famously discovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter, in the Valley of the Kings, in 1922.

She points out that Tut's "wine cellar" included some of the first white wines in the history of Pharaonic Egypt, along with the red varieties that have been traced farther back before his time.

"Scientists Have a Strange New Theory About How King Tut Actually Died"
Tim Newcomb for Popular Mechanics; June 16, 2023.

Forensic Egyptologist Sofia Aziz sounds a cautionary note about the risks of drinking and driving.

Beer gets you near, but gin gets you in.

I just made that up.

Not words that I live by!
