Jerry Lee Lewis died at 87 yrs today..

I saw him perform in Norfolk many decades ago. His work was 'ok' but he was obviously inebriated, rude to specific audience members and very profane. Much of the audience walked out before the show was over..

They had that wrong, a few days ago, is this real?

edit: OK, it looks like it's real now.

I never really was a fan, for several reasons. Not the least of which, it just wasn't my kind of music.

.

I had to double-check, as Jerry Lee was reported to have died two days ago as well.

He was a dynamic performer, but didn't always abide by societal rules. Marriage to his 13 year old first cousin once removed raised a few eyebrows, to say the least.

Like a lot of talented musicians, Jerry Lee makes performing look so easy. Here's a sample going way back for the "youngsters" here who may not be familiar with Jerry Lee Lewis. He was definitely one of a kind.

"The Memphis Sound"......

Not a fan, of the music or the city.
I lived or was stationed there 3 different times. Too many of the performers of that era and locale were exactly the boozing pill poppers the media finally showed them to be.
There was much better music coming out of Beale St during the same era but it got little attention compared the white entertainers like JLL, Elvis, early Conway Twitty (before he went country) , Mickey Gilley etc.

A few? I wouldn't cross the street to watch this pedophile perform. Don't care how good his music was.

At the time he married her, she was of legal age.

I don't have to like and/or agree with an artist's political beliefs, sexual orientation, religious views, etc. If they've got talent, I can appreciate it.

A completely unoriginal piano player with his '56 FL, '58 Fleetwood and '44 wife/cousin, a few weeks before her 14th birthday.

He stole his whole shtick from Harry "The Hipster" Gibson.

Harry Gibson, from 1944. Coincidentally, the year Lewis' wife was born.

Of course, that whole style goes back to guys like "Pinetop" Perkins.

The standards I live by have no relationship to the standards (or possible lack thereof) of artists whose talents I may enjoy experiencing. I don't wish to judge anyone and everyone (nor am I in any position to do so) before I listen to a song or watch a movie or look at a painting.

Ron, if you'd like to see an excellent documentary on a lack of "standards", watch Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey. Learn about grooming, pedophilia, and incest on a monumental scale within the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It's quite an eye-opener. Makes Jerry Lee look like a choirboy.

Based on limited research, I'm advised the law at that time allowed 15 year olds to marry and that both Jerry Lee and his child bride lied.
As I previously stated, we obviously have different standards and values.
I know this, if my 13 year old daughter wanted to be with her first (or second) cousin who was a mature adult, there would be someone going to jail, might be me.
I guess you can let your 13 year old do what ever.

It was a British reporter who was lied to about her age.

Her age at the time of their marriage was not below the legal minimum requirement in the state of Mississippi, which is where the ceremony took place.

Do you even bother reading what I post? No matter what I say, you continue to be confusing my standards and values with those of Jerry Lee Lewis.

I think we're done here.
