Even if the robot mower itself was inexpensive (which it definitely isn't), replacing the blades that often would be a deal killer for me.
I recently bought a place that's just over an acre in size. I made sure that the rider mower (actually, two of them) on the property were included in the sale. I don't mind cutting the grass the old fashioned way... or failing that, I'll get a goat.
I have it run 23/7 during the summer. I'm probably a bit more neglectful of it than I should be so I personally likely do it about every other month or when I feel it getting dull. It's only three blades. Takes maybe 5 minutes.
Blackrams, you need to get ahold of TDA and have him fit your Kubota with remote controls. A couple of servos, a camera, and a cellular data link, and you can be sitting pretty in your house, away from all the allergens. Drive it just like a video game!
Full autonomous operation might take a bit more effort, even for TDA.
Zeb, I like the idea but, If this was a financially feasible option, I'd definitely consider doing that.
When the sink hole developed under the Corvette Museum in KY and all those Corvettes fell through the floor, the work to "fix" things back up was done with RC skid steers. It was fascinating to watch but, they made a point to say that RC control was very expensive.
I got the contact info for a guy who comes out to spray the lawns of some houses in the neighborhood and he's done my yard two or three times now. Kills the bad stuff and feeds the good stuff. I also have the Automower cutting low so weeds don't grow and the Bermuda is encouraged to spread out. I am finally seeing some massive improvement in the lawn. I can't wait to see the results in a year or two.
Reminds me of the comparison between my own and my neighbor's grass. But, in this case, the roles are reversed. He's been hiring a weed/feed guy for several years, not so on my yard but, I'm working at it. There seem to be a number of new self-propelled remotely operated or robot type mowers out there since the start of this thread. Unfortunately, none are within my reach financially. Well, not really but, I'm just too tight to spend that kind of money on them.

I've lived here for almost four years now (hard to believe already...) and I'm finally getting the lawn into a presentable state. It's been the bane of my existence getting it fixed up. Next house will certainly have sod lol

I and my wife did the sod thing in southern Mississippi. Could not find a crew we could (or were willing) to afford. Of course, as I transported those pallets of sod, we got a weather warning of an (previously not-forecasted) incoming storm. I haven't hustled that much or hard in years but, got all the sod laid out before the major rainfall hit. Doubt I'll do that again. My whole body ached for a week.
