I am trying to clean up my movie collection, and save some disk space while I am at it. I'm using Format Factory for the converter and my choices are mp4, avi 3gp rmvb wmv Mkv mpeg vob mov flv and dive

Some of those I've never even heard of before. I just did one from Mkv to mp4 and it went UP 25% so that was a bad choice

I usually use MKV but have used AVI also. They are pretty close in size. I don't know if there is a type that will give a smaller file size but I worry about going smaller personally since I use these to stream to our televisions. I guess if your only watching them on a tablet or cellphone there is probably something that is smaller in size but I don't know how that would look on a TV screen or a 27" monitor like I have on my computer.

It isn't the file format so much as the bit-rate and the compression codec you choose. Most file formats are just "containers" these days... h264 or 265 was where it was at a couple years back...danged if I know at the moment, as long as it plays i don't give a dang...

Don't compress files more by changing format etc. Small files to big screens suck most times. If watching small screens like tablets and smartphones then the size of screen will hide most problems.

Is cheap to buy big disks. I wouldn't bother w/ file compression, changing bit rates, etc.
Even slowest HD are faster then needed for video playing. Even slow NAS boxes and old PC can store video.
