We recently got a new, to us, house that has a hinged glass shower door. The door has is held into the hinge by compression. The problem is the door shifted from the top of the frame by about 1/4 inch which now prevents the door from closing fully. I want to be careful in what I do so I don't end up with a shattered door. And folks with experience?

You might try using a heat gun or hair dryer to warm up the frame. It will soften any adhesive plus expand it slightly. Then just try pushing the glass back into it. If that works, put a small bead of waterproof silicone on the seam, on both sides, to keep it from pulling back out. If it wont go back in, take a chance using a bar clamp across the glass and over both sides (against some wood blocks to spread the load) and slowly draw the clamp together. The glass should be pretty strong if you pull it laying close to glass and your pulling 90* to face of the glass. wear some safety glasses. Worse that could happen is the glass breaks, but its not usable anyway right ? Lay down some paper or plastic in case it does so it will be easy to clean up.

Spot Heat can break the safety glass.

Too many different shower door designs out there to give a solution without more info. I have one, where the frame has separated from the glass about 1/4" about 12 way down the hinge side, but it's because of settling in the floor which makes the door opening no longer square and plumb. (whole house is settling actually)
It's on my 'fix it' list, and will be an easy fix since the door frame has adjustment where the top hinge is affixed.

I didnt mean hot enough to burn your hand. I meant 'warm' it up down the entire side. Could do the same thing if you took the door off and set it out in the sun for a few hours.

Ive watched how this type of door is made...they do RV windows the same way. They lay the glass flat on a plate, and press the metal sides onto it with a press that runs down the length of it. They use a hardening adhesive to bond the corners/ seams.
