I've had one in storage for several years because when I first got into conversions, Ed of Fiero Factory told me the Getrag I wanted coupled to (first, my 4.9 and then my 3800SC) conversion wouldn't hold up to the torque/abuse. Well, I accepted his advice but hated the auto that was coupled to both conversions so, I eventually swapped it over to a Getrag. Used all the best parts, Centerline Aluminum flywheel and dual friction clutch, ect...........
But, just in case Ed was right, I procured an extra Getrag, just in case. Well, I've had that Getrag sitting in my shop for 6 or 7 years and I honestly doubt I'm ever going to need it. Maybe I don't "abuse" my Fiero as much as Ed thought I would but regardless, I've never had a problem with it.
So, I let a friend know about this extra transmission just in case he needed it. He didn't but let a few others know about it. I priced it based on what I invested in it way back when I first got it. Has the value of these transmissions dropped or did I just pay too much for it? Not sure at this point. Maybe I'm way out of line on my asking price, I honestly don't know. So, I'm asking, what's a fairly low mileage Getrag worth. Not wanting to say my asking price here because, I wasn't really trying to sell it but, the responses I got surprised me. What's a Getrag with all the brackets still attached worth?

I think the values have probably declined a bit since there are now other options (F23, F40, etc.). Back in the day a good low mileage Getrag would be at least $1000, with really low ones bringing $1500+. It's probably been 15 years now, but I sold a 5000 mile '87 Getrag for $1000 and the guy I sold it to resold it for almost $2000.
Nowadays, with the aforementioned F23 & F40 options, once you get to a certain price point for a nice Getrag the cost of converting to the newer transmissions starts making more sense. I think this is what is limiting the values/prices on Getrags. Still, there are probably plenty of people still out there who would rather have a stock Fiero and would gladly pay for a low mileage Getrag to replace their worn out one. You just have to find that person who wants or needs one.
My very first Fiero was an 87SE with a Getrag. The seller told me that the trans was worth $500. That was my eBay bid that I got the whole car for. It might be the right price for the right buyer but it certainly won't be a quick sell at that price.
My V8 Fiero has 179000 on the 5 speed and it still shifts great. I have a spare 4 speed sitting in my shed with around 70000 miles on it out of my 86 SE that was totaled.
Honestly I would probably upgrade to a new 6 speed unless the price was under $500

That's precisely why I was willing to sell my extra Getrag. I just don't see me needing it.

I only know of a few folks that have coupled F40 six speeds to whatever engine in a Fiero, it's not the easiest or cheapest conversion ever attempted for sure. Additionally, my understanding is that first gear is geared so low that it's pretty much useless.
Regardless, I didn't ask the question about the Getrag to concern myself with six speed conversions. I understand why you indicate the $500 value. I priced mine slightly more than that but, really thought it was worth it.. Apparently not as far as the buyers were concerned. Again, I'm not really trying to get rid of it, it still serves the original purpose. I'm just curious.

I only brough up the conversion to explain why I wouldnt pay over $500 for a used Getrag. I would rather spend the extra on a new transmission unless the prise was too good a deal to pass up.

That's life... You do realize that as soon as you sell it - you'll NEED it???

Many years ago when I had my 3.4 conversion done, the 5 speed getrag cost $900. But now, no matter what you ask somebody will sell one from their basement for $99 (i was gonna use this opportunity to complain about the value of T-tops but changed my mind ).
We're both gonna have to live to be 100 just to get back what we paid for now rare fiero parts. Maybe when enough cars go to the crushers values will come back.

I didn't pay that much but, do have more than $500 in this Getrag.

Well now, there's a happy thought.
I sold my 88 Formula T Top a couple of years back. It was still water tight but, I warned the buyer that anything with a hole cut in the roof was eventually going to leak. Saw him a few weeks back, I was right.

Is this the one that you showed me? The one in the wooden shipping crate? It's not that I didn't think it was worth what you were asking, it's that I finally found one (which ended up being completely shot) for substantially cheaper. (Ya' learn...) If the value has dropped, it's probably due to the availability of the F23, or other Getrags (the later Beretta Getrag, in my case.)
82, The whole purpose of this thread was to try and determine what a fair price was. Had this been a sale, I would have posted it in the mall. I don't want to start any trends that may break any of the house rules.
If and when I decide to sell it, I promise to let you know the minute I put it in the mall or decide to sell locally. I honestly haven't decided what to do yet.

Geez. It is worth very little. Nothing really. Feel free to ship it to ...
We could do that but, even if it was free, shipping charges might surprise you.
Pretty sure that's how they do it on TV.
