My wife is using a 1 lb. brass hammer, similar to the one in the pic, and steel punches, to make jewelry.

The face of the hammer, over time, has chipped and spalled.
Is there any harm in "dressing" the face of the hammer with a bench grinder, and then polishing it out with sandpaper and a wire brush?
I did that this afternoon, and it looks like new, but I want to make sure it's not going to create a hazard (like shattering?) or anything.

Thanks.

That's how I do it at work.
I also chamfer the edges to avoid chip-out.
And I don't let it get over-heated on the wheel.

Cool. Thanks, man.
I did chamfer the edges too.
Didn't really have to get it too hot. The brass is quite soft compared to a grinding wheel.

It won't shatter. It may be more prone to dents depending on the temper you gave it. But it will be safe for use.
