My father has 1986 Corvette was had/had a loose steering column. Having tightened the elusive torx bolts on a Fiero column I figured no problem doing so in the Corvette. There is one substantial difference between a Fiero and a Corvette of the same vintage and that is that the Corvette column also telescopes as well as tilts. I have no problem getting it all apart however now that I am in the reassembly stages I can't get the darn lock plate on. Since this is a telescoping column the lock plate is different. The lock is more like a c-clip on an axle than a piece of spring steel on a Fiero. My problem is that I don't see any way to put a tool on to depress the lock plate.

Does anyone have and tips, tricks or insights?

Pokey,

Thanks...I think I figured out the secret. I have that lock plate tool and have used it on a Fiero. The trick is on the car with telescoping column thre is nothing to hold the center shaft in with. The trick.....you need to but a 5/16-18 set screw to put down the center shaft to lock it. Once the center shaft is locked then you can use to tool as depicted.
