I just been going to work, looking forward to my days off. Waiting for something to happen...No?
Fine. A goal.
I'm going to retire on the Oregon Coast....I got about 10 more years of work left in me (if that) to make it all happen. I have vacationed there several times, and I think I could live there....if I didn't need a job to do so.
A part-time handyman maybe....or a beach front philosopher. Something satisfying...
But the most important part is, I finally have a goal!
Speaking of goals. The wife and I sat down and talked a bit about longer term goals the other day. Being without kids we never really worried about the future too much, meh, it's not like kids are gonna starve because of us.
But the other day, I was sitting in my usual pit of depression thinking about how life just seems to be a series of giving up dreams, and decided to do something about it. I talked to the wife, and we decided that someday we may want to retire from all this doing nothing. :\
So we sat down, we owe nothing on property, house, cars etc. BUT we need a more reliable car, and want a nicer house. I also have this crazy plan to do this hike thing.... You've probably never heard of it... But anyway, we wrote out a "5" year plan, that will take around 6 years (YAY new math!!) and went through every little and big thing we wanted. Then we researched the price for each item, how much we would have to save per week to obtain the goal, and came up with a realistic number, and a realistic set of steps to reach our goals... If this works it'll be madness, the usual "do nothing and hope" method will be thrown out the window!!
Then, to make things even better I went and got a job that will actually help us get toward our goals... It's all basically witchcraft, but I feel good about it.
To top it off there is this mystical 10 year plan we came up with, I'm certain the NSA will be by to stop us at any moment before we go further, but... It turns out that without those STD's (Kids) we have a lot of disposable income... You know, if we budget and stuff, and if the future keeps coming I could potentially still retire right before I die.
The end of my 29 year goal is in sight. I have approximately 140 more work days until I retire. At least that's the plan. If the finances don't line up at that time, I'll re-up for one more year...we'll see.
I never plan to retire, especially after being semi-retired for 5 years. Once I reach retirement age, I plan to take a part time job in Disney and work a couple of days a week until I drop. Staying home can become mind numbing boring real quick and I enjoy meeting and interacting with new people.

Been my experience, that those who retire and choose to do as little as possible soon suffer physical medical problems. Stay as active as possible for as long as you can physically do things. Couch potatoes soon rot and stink just like real potatoes.

I plan on getting a part time job, but I want one that's flexible. I know I'll need something to do and a little extra spending $.

Been my experience that retiring means there is so much more to do.
I'm just happier doing those things.
Besides, I don't have a couch. Living room is under construction!
Yep, it's still on the list. Over the past few years everything else has got in the way, but I'm still doing it. I've refrained from posting about it as I don't want people thinking I'm all talk. :\ I just have things that have to come first, no matter what I want.
All I need is $50,000 down, and start making payments of $600 a month for 8 years. Looks like i'm gonna' need another job......real quick!
...Or just buy acreage for cheap in the middle of nowhere Oregon and chase chupacabras all day long I'm sure for the right price Don could teach ya the basics lol
Land is surprisingly cheap in Oregon (at least when I was looking about 2 years back, 3 acres for ~$3500 undeveloped). That's my 5 year plan honestly, regardless where I end up (preferably somewhere with mountains and trees). Step 1 buy land, step 3 make homestead...Not sure what step 2 is just yet

We worked hard, lived UNDER our means for 20 years or so and managed to buy some waterfront land on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The idea was to build a house, use it as a vacation home and then retire there sometime in the distant future.
While planning the house we realized we really wanted to just move there, get away from the stress of our high paying jobs and living on Long Island. So we added an apartment for my mother and took the leap.
Yeah, well, as they say, it ain't the leap that kills you it's the sudden stop.
Six months after moving in my mom died and six months after that my wife contracted MS.
I spent the next ten years providing 24/7 care for my partner.
She's gone now and things are MUCH better, with a new wife, grand kids and a Fiero but I'm a profoundly changed man.
This is not to say you shouldn't plan, in fact, I wish you well in your endeavor. Just be aware that man plans and God laughs.

Having a plan is no guarantee you'll reach your goal, but not having it does guarantee you won't. I'm looking for a house I could conceivably retire in, or possibly a vacation home that could one day become my home after I retire. Failing that, buy some land that I can build on later. Probably in the NC mountains. I love the ocean, but anything near the coast is big money around here.

Mom wasn't with us long enough to really get to know the place and my wife went down hill so fast that she didn't get much out of it either. Wasn't much good for me either but that's in the past. The present is good and the future is too. Well, that's the plan anyhow.

I have the utmost respect - and envy - for anyone who can retire. But I've always known that I will never be able to retire. Nobody is going to pay a Greaser from north Tulsa to do nothing.

So, my parents retired in "The Villages" in Ocala. For those who don't know, it's a retirement CITY of 100,000+ people who ride around in golf carts, drink, party, and do whatever all day in their "Disney designed" themed cities with music piped into them.
In any case, I was at Tires Plus getting tires put on my car and I was waiting in the waiting room. Some old dude was sitting there and his phone rang, and the conversation went like this:
"Yes?"
"Fine...."
"I know... you don't have to tell me."
"Yes... I know..."
"I know. Ok, is there anything else?"
"Fine, goodbye..."
So I asked the guy... "Wife nagging?"
And the guy just looked at me and nodded and then turned away. Then after a second he turned back around and said....
"You know... never retire. You young kids, you don't get it... you think retirement will be awesome. But you think your wife nags now? Just wait until you're home with her all day long. All she will do is nag. Just wait and see...."
I'm sure for the right price Don could teach ya the basics
