I decided to revert to my desktop. I backed up my OS HDD and thought I'd just install it in my old computer. Not. Now, I'm not only reinstalling Win7 (don't hate...it's not permanent) but ALL of my drivers (mobo, ethernet, graphics card, etc). What I thought would be a 5 minute task has turned into an all night ordeal. Fortunately, I have this nifty laptop to work on while I'm dicking around with the desktop. Without the laptop, I wouldn't have even been able to get online as I can't find my mobo install CD (with the ethernet driver). (Thanks again, TDA!) After all this, I have to reinstall a couple low rent games I've bought and reconfigure EVERYTHING. Once I get yet another new SSD (for an OS), I'm going back (again) to Linux.

EDIT: How the heck do you choose which folder Explorer opens when you click on the taskbar icon? For some reason, I just can't remember. Also, (this is the night of stupid questions) how do I get the toolbar to stay open? I know I can click ALT to open it.

EDIT #2: Every time I try to move a file, I get a pop up that says I need admin permission (I AM set as the administrator!). I can click "yes" (or something similar) but this is going to be yet another PITA. How do I fix this?

Might try changing permissions on the folder to you, and propagate it down. It may also be that the files are read/only. ( the details will be in the popup dialog ) Same solution route, only change it to r/w and not worry about ownership.

Might have been read only. It hasn't happened since. Next time I happens, I'll try changing permissions on that folder.

If this is a manufactured computer (Dell, HP, etc), you can download the drivers from their site. No big deal.

Explorer opens to My Documents. You can create a folder shortcut for a particular location. As for the open dialog, that's a different thing, and usually goes to the last location used for that dialog. Not that the open and save dialog boxes are different. There are 7 default dialog boxes (last I looked), and they are specified with a flag. Print and font are 2 of the other default dialog boxes.

Not sure what you are doing with the toolbar. Do you mean the menu bar?

Heh. Other than my laptop, I haven't had a "manufactured" (aka mass produced) computer in close to 10 years. I've built them all myself. Thanks to the laptop (and a handy thumb drive), I d/l'ed the chipset drivers and transferred them to the desktop. That gave me ethernet among other things. Then I could d/l the vid card drivers so I got full screen/both monitors.

I know about making shortcuts to individual folders but that requires right clicking on the Explorer icon then choosing which folder I want. Not that this is a big deal, but I've always been able to set the taskbar icon to a specific folder. I'm missing a step somewhere. I just don't know where.

I mean the toolbar. I'm talking about the bar at the top of the Explorer window that shows tabs for File, Edit, View, Tools and Help. It stays hidden unless I press the ALT button. Then, it pops up until I use one of the tabs or close/minimize the window. There's some way to keep it open all the time. Again, I just can't remember how to do it.
