Los Angeles (CNN) -- Actress Arlene Martel, who "Star Trek" fans know as Spock's bride-to-be, died in a Los Angeles hospital Tuesday of complications from a heart attack, her son said. Martel was 78.

Martel's ethnic ambiguity earned her the nickname "The Chameleon" among Hollywood casting directors in the 1960s, son Jod Kaftan told CNN.

It gained her diverse roles, including as a Russian spy on "The Monkees" and "I Dream of Jeannie," a French Underground operative in "Hogan's Heroes," a Native American woman in a "Gunsmoke" episode and as a Vulcan on "Star Trek."

Trekkies still lined up at sci-fi conventions to meet Martel and pay for autographs because of her role as T'Pring, the Vulcan priestess engaged to Spock in the first episode of the iconic show's second season.

Wow, 78 is not exactly "living long." I sure hope she prospered.

I'm 53.
78 sounds about right.

Actually, it sounds a little long.

One thing that bothers me are the 1-2 year "recovery periods" you have in your 60's and 70's - after you get each knee replaced, then get yer hips done...all that takes 5-6 years, it's almost a decade of getting joints dealt with... meh. Then, you're fit enough to be able to walk from your bed to your bathroom, maybe look out the winder' or maybe even a trip to the park bench or local store. yay!!!!!

Recovery from that stuff is getting shorter. Both my parents had hips done, and were essentially recovered in 1-2 MONTHS, not years. We were all pretty amazed at that.

That's good to hear. I guess it depends on how well your body is prior to the surgery, and where you have it done...

I am engaging in your prescription as we speak, although I had to go with Jose Cuervo Gold Especial.
Is that like generic medication as opposed to branded?

Or does it have to be Patron?

I have a love/hate relationship with my brain.
It likes to play tricks on itself involving just who's running who...but the jokes on them.

The body's really calling the shots.
That is, if the brain ever wants to see something other then midget albino transvestite amputee goat pron on a 37 inch monitor ever again.
The body can actually get you out of that chair...and getting into real peoples lives.

Eh, that's just crazy talk.
That last bong hit musta' been bigger then I thinked it was.
Stupid Tequila!

I remember her from Star Trek but never realized how much stuff she was in. She is definitely part of the Star Trek culture. Yes, she got my attention!
