So I'm finishing up the restore of an old Sears roto-spader (as they call it).
Bottom half separate from the engine, takes its own oil. When I pulled the plug, what came out looked like chocolate syrup, thicker almost. Any idea approx what weight would work best? As for quantity, should it be enough to reach up to the cone for the clutch? Or less so?

Any help would be great!
Dave

Use google w/ model #

Yeah, a model number would help. I would guess 90w, but that is just based on some models I know of. Now.... with that said, my father had a leaking gearbox and filled it with grease. Never had a problem and still uses it today

may or may not help... a manual for a similar model:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/?g6uaajjwvwadnnc

Says to use SAE 140 Hypoid Oil... so a 85w-140 gear oil I would think.

Fill to the bottom of fill plug hole, it looks like.

Lost the link but there is a build/restoration thread on one of those on either Tractorbynet or Yesterday's Tractors.
Tractorbynet requires signing up in order to get past the splash page I believe.
785 is the model #.

Mine was filled with regular axel grease but it is a different brand and chain drive, what a pain in the ass that was to replace when the wife broke that. I had to completely brake the entire thing in half. I forget the brand but it is like a 1980 something.

edit to add

I got this when is just did a Google search from sears parts direct.

Damn that bottom half is nearly the same, so close!

It seemed like there was a lot more in there than just up to the bottom of the plug in the trans..... hmmm...

Thanks for the info guys, I'll have to post a picture when it is back together.

Yeah, I am guessing they didn't understand that the gear picked up the oil as it rotated and it doesn't need to be filled to the top. Similar to the rear diff in a RWD vehicle.
