So, today I was driving past a cow pasture, and I noticed something weird. There were a hundred or so cows, but there was also a donkey. As I was driving, I noticed that one of the cows was licking the butthole of the donkey. The donkey just kind of sat there and was waving it's tail (that kept hitting the cow in the face). So without making this more assinine than it needs to be, what am I missing, what exactly would a cow find so interesting in the butthole of a donkey. Could it be salt or something?
Granted, there are a dozen or so parabolic dishes and other various RF transmitters there, so maybe the cows have been irradiated somewhat, but I'm just wondering...
"Definition of asinine (adj) Bing Dictionary as·i·nine[ áss'n ̄̀n ] 1.ridiculous: utterly ridiculous or lacking sense 2.like ass: relating to or resembling an ass"
Anyway, same reason dogs eat poo I would guess, whtever that is.
Maybe all the cows were bored and one of the cows dared the other cows to go lick that donkey's butthole. One cow said, you don't think I will!? You just caught them in the act is all.
Ya'll are a sad, sick bunch, and 84fiero123 says there are things wrong with ME?
There is, I never said you were as bad as the rest of the nuts on the forum, some of these guys are just off their rocker and that's putting it mildly.
I'm not the farmer, Melanie is and is on the phone so I ain't asking her this question but as just a guess I would say they are doing what all animals do, cleaning their but holes. every cat, dog, and every other animal on the farm does. that's just how they wipe their ass I guess. But like I said I ain't no farmer, maybe Don can give a better answer.
And just to be clear I say, "You Just Ain't Right!"

OK just because she read this just now and she gave me her answer,
Your all very sick people!
No she said it was probably a Jenney donkey and it was in heat and the cow you saw licking its butt, well it wasn't licking its butt it was licking the other thing to see if it was in heat or to make it come into heat.
I still say you all ain't right !

Hahah... this thread is awesome. I've learned much more about Donkeys (thanks Neptune) than I had ever thought I'd learn... and... I don't even want to know why the cow would be trying to make the donkey come into heat, hahah...

Yes, it's common practice for many people with livestock to pasture a doney or burro in with the other animals as a livestock guardian. If you have cattle tho, never EVER use an intact male donkey (a jack) for this purpose. Use either a jenny (female) or a gelding (castrated equine). Jacks have legendary libidos and can and will mount and have intercourse with anything they can get on, whether the female is in estrous (heat) or not.
I have seen this happen on a regular basis when I lived in Louisiana--a small pasture with 3 cows and one donkey next to the road that I lived down. The poor cows would be running for dear life with the jack firmly embedded and running along with only back hooves on the ground. It happened so frequently, that the school bus driver refused to drive the kids down that stretch of road.
As far as why the cows were licking--could be any number of reasons. My thoughts. If you have ever driven by a pasture, you've probably seen many splotches of tall green grass--taller than the rest of the forage. This is grass growing out of a cow pile--where cattle have defecated. Cattle will not eat this grass no matter how hungry they get, nor will they nose around a cow pile or horse poop pile even tho equine poop, because they are simple stomached (non-ruminant) often pass undigested grain. It's their instinctive way to avoid getting internal parasites. For the same reason, they do not lick other's buttholes. I rather suspect, as Steve pointed out, that this was a jenny, and she was either coming into heat, which means she would be exuding a thick mucous from her vulva, which the cattle would have found 'interesing'......... OR, the major component of all mammal urine is called urea. Urea, is also artificially produced, and is a part of many cattle/horse feeds--it's high in nitrogen. If this was a jenny, the cattle, as disgusting as it sounds, were probably licking or smelling the jenny's urea from where she had recently pizzed.
Now, aren't ya sorry you asked?

Hahah... no, I am not sorry I asked, I am always happy to learn new things. I never know when I may end up somewhere that someone may ask, and I'll be able to throw-in that tid-bit... so I appreciate it.
But it is still hilarious. I didn't really get a good look as to whether or not it was a male or not since I was driving, and focusing more on the action of the cow. But I did not notice anything that "stood out"... haha...
