Chinese and Vietnamese ships were locked in a tense standoff Thursday in disputed waters where Beijing is trying to set up an oil rig, a Vietnamese commander said, as the United States urged both sides to de-escalate tensions in the most serious incident in the South China Sea in years.

Its part of our "pivot to the Pacific" an attempt by the current US regime to keep China in check.

Its doomed to failure. They can't keep Nevada in check, let alone China.

The Chinese and Indochina* have been skirmishing over a thousand years with each other

I can see the Vietnamese allowing the US back in Cham rahn bay to keep Chinese expansion at bay. "Partners in less then 40 years...quite a turn around from bombing them back to the stone age."

*Vietnam is what Indochina is called today.

How many red lines are going to be drawn (and crossed) during this incident?

Hopefully none that involve us. We have no horse in this race. China and Vietnam have already fought a brief war many years ago after our war with Vietnam ended.

Have you guys looked at the huge area China is claiming? It's crazy. They are claiming some areas only 70 miles off the Philippine coast. I mean hundreds of miles away from China. Now China is famous for silly claims for compensation, it's how things work here. They want money or oil or minerals. And they will press hard for it too.

War could disrupt the Nike factory operations in Vietnam.

I think I have the gift of prophecy (or made a lucky guess).

Vietnamese mobs ransack foreign factories in anti-China violence

Mobs on Tuesday attacked scores of businesses at a Singapore-run industrial park near Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam. The violence has prompted many foreign factories to halt operations as a precaution.

Yue Yuen Industrial, the world’s biggest sports shoe maker, which supplies Nike, said it was not affected but had suspended production in Ho Chi Minh City as a precaution. Li & Fung, the world’s biggest sourcing company, said some of its suppliers in Vietnam halted production on Wednesday as a precautionary measure.

The US should stay out of it. The US is going bankrupt "assisting "other countries political agenda" . Let those countries bankrupt themselves spending their funds squabbling over various territories.

When the US was in Vietnam, China was in the background supporting the RVN against the US. The socialists running the US today are trying to collapse the US economy supporting enemies of the US with economic and military aid.

The US needs to put some fear back in the world. Drop some bombs on both of them till they both shut up. After you do that to 20 squabbling countries maybe they might get the idea and quit all these frivolous mini wars. After a while you just get tired of this crap over and over, same thing, different location.

China already is hording some minerals that only they have needed for battery production. This adds to their stockpile that we won't be able to access.

They would be able to build military bases and threaten other countries.

We have had a very long time to reflect backwards (is there any other way?).....should we have stayed out of Vietnam?
Korea?

How different would our world be today, (really) if we had?
We learned a lot in those wars.....or did we?

Korea--we did the right thing.
Vietnam--not so much.

Hunger and abuse are not seen as a big issue today in S. Korea, and I think it can be said with a lot of truth, that had we allowed S. Korea to fall, that nation would be pretty much under the same conditions and harsh thumb the north is.

Of course, it does make a difference, inasmuch as Korea is seen as a victory while Vietnam is not.
Don't blame me tho--we were winning when I left.
