They saw Google doing it, now they want to get into the 'lets buy everything in sight and see what sticks' game.

The gaming community is not happy...

I can see it now, we will map our homes with our cell phones then we can use Oculus to visit one another...

Check this out on reddit...Posted a month ago....
So no way to confirm this, but my friend works in the same building as Oculus, and he ran into Mark Zuckerberg taking the elevator to Oculus' floor.

The OR is 'old news' anyway, imo - The latest one from Sony MIGHT far better than their last few attempts at VR, but the direct retinal display is the way to go 'full immersion'. Pretty amazing that the OR can be bought for under 300 bucks, though.

Why Facebook?

Rather short sighted of them.

Facebook is not a company of grass-roots tech enthusiasts. Facebook is not a game tech company. Facebook has a history of caring about building user numbers, and nothing but building user numbers. People have made games for Facebook platforms before, and while it worked great for a while, they were stuck in a very unfortunate position when Facebook eventually changed the platform to better fit the social experience they were trying to build.

Don’t get me wrong, VR is not bad for social. In fact, I think social could become one of the biggest applications of VR. Being able to sit in a virtual living room and see your friend’s avatar? Business meetings? Virtual cinemas where you feel like you’re actually watching the movie with your friend who is seven time zones away?

But I don’t want to work with social, I want to work with games.

Fortunately, the rise of Oculus coincided with competitors emerging. None of them are perfect, but competition is a very good thing. If this means there will be more competition, and VR keeps getting better, I am going to be a very happy boy. I definitely want to be a part of VR, but I will not work with Facebook. Their motives are too unclear and shifting, and they haven’t historically been a stable platform. There’s nothing about their history that makes me trust them, and that makes them seem creepy to me.

And I did not chip in ten grand to seed a first investment round to build value for a Facebook acquisition.

I have the greatest respect for the talented engineers and developers are Oculus. It’s been a long time since I met a more dedicated and talented group of people. I understand this is purely a business deal, and I’d like to congratulate both Facebook and the Oculus owners. But this is where we part ways.

That is the American way.... build up a business so it looks good and then wait for someone to buy it. Take the money and run

With a LOT of money to burn on R&D. If i was them i would have rode it out to see what happens and not jump ship on the first day. Google is an AD company and look at the cool things they come out with that can be used for other things..

That's an interesting link. I've been dipping my Toe back into VR the past few weeks, and I feel that SOME group will push the cok can of progress further. Thanks OR, for bringing a lot of eyeballs and renewed interest in VR. But it's not like OR is the only game in town, nor will them going away spell the doom to 'homebrew VR'. and cost has come way, waaaaay down. like 1/10th the price. We're only a few kickstarter campaigns away from VR-Utopia.

Thing is, I don't want to have 'mundane VR'. I don't even want cyber whoo-ha. If there's contant people want , it'll happen...

Looking forward to seeing what happens with Avogent's Retinal Display...

(or some other company that takes THAT to the next level...)
