A top Commerce Department official pushed back Wednesday against concerns that the Obama administration is opening the door to an Internet takeover by Russia, China, and other authoritarian regimes.
The fears stem from the Commerce Department's announcement last Friday that it plans to give the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, an international nonprofit group, control over the technical system that allows computers to connect to Web addresses.
...
The transition to full ICANN control of the Internet's address system won't happen until October 2015, and even then, there likely won't be any sudden changes. ICANN was already managing the system under a contract from the Commerce Department.
But having the ultimate authority over the domain-name system was the most important leverage the United States had in debates over the operation of the Internet. It was a trump card the U.S. could play if it wanted to veto an ICANN decision or fend off an international attack on Internet freedom.
Some have expressed concern that giving up that leverage could allow authoritarian governments or the United Nations to pressure ICANN to censor online content. For example, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, a Tennessee Republican, called the administration's announcement a "hostile step" against free speech.
"Giving up control of ICANN will allow countries like China and Russia that don't place the same value in freedom of speech to better define how the Internet looks and operates," she said in a statement on Monday.

Carter cared about this country and was not a moron. He may have failed as a president, but it wasn't due to lack of effort. ( aside from polices that i wouldn't agree with, he micromanaged *everything* which destroyed him )
He was a good guy at heart.
Back to the topic tho, why is anyone surprised that The O wants to do this? Everything else he's doing is to reduce our power..
is he increasing government powers or reducing them ? you cry when he increases and cry when he reduces them pick one and stay with it
or else I guess you just love to cry about him no matter what he does
Do you actually have ANYTHING to say on the ACTUAL subject? or does policy discussion scare you.................... I think we all know the answer, trolling.
or else I guess you just love to cry about him no matter what he does
I have exchanged opinions with many who seem to abide by the very thing you describe, but I can't for the life of me figure out why.... I mean, shouldn't every man be granted accolades with the same fair-handedness as the condemnation that is assigned to him?
To do otherwise is at least less then honest. And to any rational man listening should probably regard with caution any information coming from that source.

A minor disagreement here. I hear this phrase, or something similar, "He's/she's really a good person, I just disagree with their politics". Please instruct me as to how a 'good person' can support the kind of policies that we see in force today? How can a 'good person' support an administration that would destroy America for an entire class of citizen, for the sake of their re-election. I have a different understanding of what a "good guy at heart" means.
Not saying there aren't some of those on the other side of the isle. I don't have any more respect for those who support amnesty, as an example, for the support of corporate interests who just want to keep labor costs down. Chances are strong that the next Republican POTUS candidate will be a supporter of amnesty. How is any form of amnesty good for the tax paying citizen? How does a "good person" sell their constituency and their well-being to lettuce farmers who want to keep harvest costs down?
One of the front runners is on stage with Hilary Clinton saying, "Hilary and I disagree on a few things......". Really? I'm extremely tired of 'go-along-to-get-along' politics. I want someone who will look the Devil in the eye and spit in it.

Well, on this one, it isn't the same. And so rayb misses that and shows he misses the point. We want reduced government powers applied internally within the country, and increased government powers to protect our liberties externally.
There is no hypocrisy there. There is no waffling and "pick one and stay with it". It was two different issues, that he didn't understand the nature of. Unless he did understand the difference, and was just trying to make people look hypocritical. I've given Obama credit. Great job with the call on the Somali pirates. He didn't have to do any planning. But he did probably have to give the green light. And on the bin Laden call, that was a very tough call. Now I could nitpick and say that it really wasn't that tough a call since if it went bad, he would have the media covering for him like they do with everything. But still. Still. Look at the task of a president. Is he protecting our foreign interests? Is he defending the constitution? The answers are obvious.

Its pretty simple. The 'Good Hearted" feel what they are doing is the right thing for the country.. Carter did not go out with an intent to destroy America. He loved his country and thought he was doing the best for it. For people that do not have the same political leaning, he may have been sadly mistaken, but his intent was genuine. I wont fault the man personally for being wrong but doing what he thought was right.
Obama *did* have the internet to destroy this country. Far different agenda.
Obumbles is destroying America ,destroying our military capability & there are 100,000,000 Americans that do not care Thermonuclear war is comming directly to your town ! are not you happy that now the Chinese new fleet of nuclear Missile submarines are patroling America,s coast !
NO just the bad stuff granted that was MOST of what he did
example afgan was good esp the northern alliance/CIA FIRST PART iraq WAS bad as it hurt the effort in afgan against the real problem of religious nuts like the tali-ban and benforgotten but both wars should had been paid for on the budget

.....................ABSOLUTELY AMAZING !!
He wont be in power much longer. We can work on rebuilding ourselves after he is gone. No, it wont happen overnight due to how deep the hole he has made, but it will happen.

OK, (off topic it is I guess) so can you list some things that the "O" has done right, or "good" for America? And give a short reason why you think it was good?
BTW, for the record I dont fear or cry about obama, I voice my right to an ponion.
but both wars should had been paid for on the budget
Agree. Many of us on the conservative side were screaming at him about that. We didn't give him a pass on that just because he was "our guy".
The democrat controlled congress and Obama haven't even had a budget for the past 5 years. What do you think of that? And speaking of wars being paid for on the budget, then what do you think of Obama's deficit? Because it has been larger than Bush's every single year.

War is rarely in the budget.
But i agree with you that ( at least personally ) i did not agree with everything GWB did.. Even Reagan wasn't perfect and i'm willing to step up and say it.. The Obama flock cant seem to do that. Must be genetic. Lets hope none of them pass that gene on.

You got it. When Bin Laden was killed under his watch, it was because Bush set it up. The economic recovery and the boom of my (our) stocks have nothing to do with our present President. This administration is characterized as not getting anything done. What people forget is who controls the House of Representatives. The Republicans. What is the job of the HOR? The major power of the House is to pass federal legislation that affects the entire country, The House has some exclusive powers: the power to initiate revenue bills,

You might check out the country's deficit reductions as well. Bush left with over a trillion dollar deficit, now down to half that. But you go ahead and hate, it's in your genetic makeup.

I remember that executive order. 2) Did we ever hear of one dime that any federal operation saved, or even hear of the review's results ? 3) Did you know equal pay for women is not a reality in the White House to this day ?

In regards to my post which you commented on, both that he "wont be in power much longer", and "after we can being go clean up the damage" are both FACTS. My post has NOTHING to do with past presidents. Give it a f-ing rest. This about what Obama has done to this country, no one else. Or are you morons simply incapable of not blaming someone else for your own problems?
Want to try it again? Bow to the socialist bastard if you like, but dont confuse facts from fiction, and take responsibility for your own actions.

Do your own damn legwork. You saying this is all lies doesn't make it so. I'm beginning to realize what a waste of electrons this place is. Haters gonna hate, so have a long and healthy one, when the GOP blows the next election as well.
