i tried searching but everything that came up was for manual cars. i need to change the drivers side axle because the boot split. the trans currently doesn't leak. should i change the seal? good brand? how much fluid will i lose? if a lot should i change the filter and gasket too? the trans works great now and i don't want to break it.

I don't believe you would loose much fluid, given the amount of work involved to get the axle out I would replace the seal. As far as brands go SKF, Timken, National in my opinion are good.

Replacing that axle is not difficult but at times it needs to be pried or slide hammered out of the transmission. The other issue is that you may disturb wheel alignment when you disconnect and re-install the strut at the top end. Also a good time to replace not only the seals but the bearing hub as well.

There is no need to disturb the alignment.
Undo the toe link, pop the knuckle from the ball joint, loosen the upper nuts on the strut to swing the strut out of the way as you pull the splined end of the axle out of the rear hub.
