I have an 86’ was a 5 speed and swapping in a 4 speed. 4 speed is an 85/86 Muncie. I have a rebuilt 4 speed shifter, brand new 4 speed cables from Rodney dickman. I need to fabricate cable brackets since I don’t have the original piece but I bought Rodney’s cable repair bracket to help use as a temple for when I fabricate the bracket. Problem is I can’t even begin to get this thing to shift correctly to see where the bracket should go. There is a lot of tension in the front to back position the side to side cable has a lot of slack but is still stiff. I can’t find a happy medium between the 2. Can anymore be offer a suggestion I’m ready to rip this thing out and just pay to get the 5 speed rebuilt as frustrating as this has been

Hard to say what is going on. if you look in factory service manual It will show pictures of how everything is assembled. If everything is assembled and adjusted correctly the shifting should be very smooth. Can you shift the transmission by manually moving the forks? Do the shift cables have soft bends with out any right angle bends. Is the transmission filled with the correct lubricant?
Should you ever want to chat or need engine parts I have a whole bunch here.
