I did a remote oil filter when I did a 4.9 swap. There are multiple locations you can use, just do whatever makes sense to you.

so i saw one kit on ebay.... the engine side of the system has the hoses coming out what looks to be flat against the block. would that be a problem with routing? that whole area looked like a beach after a tanker spill. i need to do some serious degreasing and power washing

I always found oil filter replacements on Fieros to be pretty easy. To change the oil you must go underneath anyway so if you're already there it's just a matter of unscrewing the oil filter and screwing another one back on. .

I had also considered a remote mounted oil filter years ago when I first got into Fieros, due to the angle the oil filters sit on these engines. However, I soon learned that it's not difficult to change the oil filters without making a big mess. I even pre-fill the new filters (about 75% full) and don't have any problem with spillage.

Make sure the oil you're finding all over the side/bottom of your engine isn't actually leaking past a rock-hard non-sealing O-ring on the base of the distributor. The distributor sits in a high pressure oil gallery, and oil leaking past a degraded O-ring at this location is not uncommon. The oil then runs down the outside of the engine and makes a mess below.

Solution: Unscrew oil filter until you can move it a bit by hand then stop. Now place a small plastic bag over the filter and unscrew it /. The filter stays in the bag. Then tie it closed. Works every time and your hands stay clean as well. This was a tip from Joe (olejoedad)
