When we are on the road it no secret that our Fieros are usually smaller than most cars so figured that ultra bright tail and brake lights would help the car be noticed. Taillights that are 400% brighter was the goal and LEDs would bring the Fiero into the modern age where all cars use them. After testing several brands by investing $90 The Sylvania Super Bright Zevo Red LED's were the brightest and came out on top. The Part number is 2357R. Sylvania says to not use the white ZEVO lights and the are too bright and for off road use only. The runner up that were almost as bright was the Auxito. These LED bulbs are not cheap but are direct fit and the Sylvania is guaranteed for life. Doing the job once and done is appealing. The difference in illumination is absolutely massive. Replacing the flasher with a solid state unit may be necessary but my Fiero already had one. I'll try to get some pics up early next week.

Great question. Replaced many bulbs with LED's over the years.. Some LED lamps fit right in while others don't. In my case the Sylvania Zevo fit imy 85GT most of the time. On lamp sockets that didn't, a quick spin of a Dremel on the top edge of the lamp socket did it. It is about a minutes worth of work and is only required on the 84-86 cars. The 87-88 lamp sockets are all direct fit. If you want LED lamps that will fit all Fieros perfectly every time, the LED's w the four row COB strips shaped exactly like the old 1157 bulbs do every time.

It would be good to see side by side pictures for stock vs. LED.

I have tried about 10 different styles of LEDs in the rear, and while they all were rated to be brighter, none actually were when installed, and the side to side comparison was made.
It likely has to do with the geometry of the LED and the reflectors within the tailight housing.

I would agree. I tested many different brands of LEDs for the rear taillights too, spending quite a bit of time and money to locate and evaluate the ultra bright LEDs that fit the 1157 socket.. If you come across the Sylvania Zevo White LED lamps (made in Italy) they are so bright that on the package it says "for off road use only" . On the red LED Zevo package it says applicable for taillights and stoplights. The bulb shaped Auxito LEDs are also quite bright and I have them on one vehicle. The bottom line is that the market is loaded with a lot of inferior low light LED Chinese garbage being peddled out there. On You Tube you can find comparative light tests.

I converted all bulbs to LED's a few years back and added a 3 wire (grounded) flasher for the turn signals. As was mentioned, some might need to be finessed to fit but I replaced all the OE sockets at the time of the conversion. The best improvement was the headlights. I had already done the Truck Lite glass 6054 housing swap with halogen bulbs but dropping in the LED units really made a big difference.

PS. I do miss the ogre.

I have replaced all of the conventional tail lights with LEDs on all four of my Meras. These are obviously 87 and 88 models. However, I did need to do a small mod to the sockets on several of the cars. The OEM socket needed to be slightly beveled on several of the lights to properly fit the LEDs into the factory sockets. Be prepared to do this if needed during the conversion.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. On my 85GT notchback I did have to use the Dremel to do the beveling that you reference but on my 87 GT the sockets were cut low and all the LED type lamps that I tried fit right in. I believe the fit depends on the brand of LED lamps, the model Fiero and the style/shape. So far the high intensity Sylvania Zevo and Auxito lamps are direct fit but the notchback taillight housing and the fastback housings seem different. They may use a different style socket so that may be a factor.. If you locate the four element COB LED lamps that have exactly the same bulb shape as a regular 1157 bulbs they will fit every Fiero.
