Hi I’m relatively new to dealing with distributors and need some help timing my 86 Fiero gt auto.

So basically I moved the distributor around until the car would run and then I marked the notch on the harmonic balancer and the 10 degree mark on the little timing bracket thing. Then I disabled the ecm and started the car and adjusted the distributor until the two marks were lined up.

The car runs good now but backfires when accelerating hard which it did not do even before I tried to set the distributor timing.

I’m not really sure what to do now so if anyone has any advice or tips on distributor timing I would appreciate it.

The car also backfires at idle when it’s warmed up. No clue if this is related or not

Hi I appreciate the help but I still have one question is the backfiring most likely related to the timing problem or is it a separate issue

It could be related, it could be something different, once the timing is correct, you'll see if it's fixed or not, if not then there's more diagnosis.
