It is just me, or is the knob really close to the steering wheel when the shift knob is all the way to the left in Reverse? I'm talking about with a longer 85/86 shift lever, not the shorter 84 shift lever.

Does the knob get in the way of working the steering wheel? Maybe this isn't much of an issue because Reverse is rarely used.

I'm thinking of using the Muncie's shifter for my F23 install... but in this case, 1st/2nd all the way to the left will be frequently used, and I don't want the knob getting in the way of the steering.

Fiero Shifters do have a long 'throw' To make a proper ' short shifter' you need to add length below the pivot VS the usual ' cut it down'. I haven't really looked, but if one could add length from the select pivot it should decrease the side to side motion.

There is also that the shifter inside the car doesn't really control how far it needs to go for a proper shift, The transmission needs what ever it needs, its the levers on the trans and Shifter assembly that controls how much movement. I have not done the F23 swap yet, I don't know what levers are used on the trans., but if I was, I'd put it in and see where I could mod either the shifter or trans levers or both to get a true short shift / select.

When you think about it it's pretty elementary, the longer the arm at the shifter and shorter at the transmission, the shorter the shift. The end that is further from the pivot always moves a greater distance.

I did this exercise with just the travel limits of the cabin shifter alone.

I’m setting up the linkages to use a fair amount, but not all of the travel available from the cabin shifter.

I had a spare 5-speed Isuzu shifter assembly on had. It placed the knob 2.5" away from the steering wheel.

I decided to bend my shift lever until I had 3" of clearance between the knob and the steering wheel. Slightly more than stock; it shouldn’t create any problems.
