Air Fuel Gauge Burned Out by Dennis LaGrua

Due to the fact that I run a boosted engine, there are important extra gauges that Ive added the the dash to monitor critical parameters: Fuel pressure, Vacuum/Boost, and an Air Fuel gauge. Fuel Pressure is important as if it goes too low and the engine goes lean under boost it can blow. Vacuum/boost is IMO equally important as it shows if the supercharger is functioning. Air fuel gauge is also critical as it will show where the mixture is . Again too little fuel under boost and there goes a piston.
All gauges were working well until today where the air fuel gauge pinned to max even with the ignition in the on position. Had a spare changed it and now all is fine. I find it unusual that the digital air fuel gauge burned out. Can't figure out why except that it may have received a voltage spike or it was just cheap Chinese quality. My opinion is that it was a low quality Chinese unit that just burned out. They're bringing over some real garbage from that country. Next replacement if necessary; Stewart Warner like my other gauges. They cost more but never had a problem with that brand.

Hi Dennis.I agree quality gauges and sensors are vital for the survival of a performance engine. Stewart Warner are some of the best. I run Bosch sensors for fuel pressure and temp. Also for pre throttle body and manifold pressure/vacuum and intake air temp. Also Bosch lambda O2 sensors on each header. my gauges are a mixture of stock and stewart warner. No map or maf or egr. Nothing worse than a failed sensor or gauge when you a running it hard. sleek

Great to hear that another car enthusiast shares the view of precise engine monitoring. If you have ever seen the cockpit of a plane it is loaded with gauges that monitor just about everything. When you are in the air, engine function is critical, so why not monitor your automobile engine this way on the ground?. Most automobiles have gas, temperature and oil pressure gauges and they are important but IMO just as important is air fuel mixture, vacuum/boost and fuel pressure. If they are not to spec, one full throttle run can kill an expensive engine, Better safe than sorry, The fuel pressure and vacuum boost gauges on my Fiero are Stewart Warner but they didn't offer an air fuel gauge when the car was built 15 years ago.. Most of those A/F gauges on the market are "off brand" and thats what we have. Now we know how off they really are
