I was sitting here pondering on how to potentially get more fuel in my fiero then I saw a 17 gallon fuel cell on summit racing I measured it and it should fit very well in the small storage compartment in the rear of the car I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to add a fuel cell in the rear as it would allow the car to hold close to 30 gallons of gas if you somehow found a way to also keep the original fuel tank
Why? It would basically make your car a bomb if you get rear ended. It would add an extra 150#s to the very rear screwing up the weight distribution even more. Unless you live 250 miles from the nearest gas station why would you need 30 gallons of gas in such a tiny car? My fullsize chevy work van doesn't even have a 30 gallon tank.

Yeah no, do not put gas in the trunk, there's no point, it messes with the weight distribution, incredibly dangerous (sitting on top of the muffler), etc. I put a 5 gallon fuel cell in the front trunk, spare tire delete, it ended up being exactly the same weight (full of fuel) as the tire, jack, brackets, etc, and I have more space in the frunk now. I get 500+km on a "tank" now, drove from New Brunswick to Ontario, only stopped for fuel twice. It's "safe" (enough) as there's nothing hot up there, and it's fairly far back from the bumper, and nestled between frame rails, etc. there's storage space on each side under the flat floor piece, room for a quart of oil, can of fix a flat, small tire inflator, and a plug/patch kit, all hidden in the floor beside the tank, giving me a very clean look, without sacrificing driveability/peace of mind.
I believe that the gasoline tank in a Fiero was mounted in the middle of the car for safety reasons. My 3800Sc gets 29-30 hwy mpg. Even in mixed driving thats about 300 miles per tank. If you have a 2.5L with the five speed you can get almost 400-450 miles per tank. A 2.8L w a Getrag can get you mileage in the high 20's. Do you really need to add a fuel cell? Years back the Ford Pinto was plagued with gas tank explosions from the rear mounted gas tank.

I like this setup. How does it plumb into the fuel system? Is it connected to your main tank? Do you have to fill both tanks separately when at the gas station?

I have a vent line hooked into the evap line coming off the main tank, and I have a second pump hooked into the main tanks fuel return line, so when the main tank is empty, I turn the second pump on, and it transfers the fuel into the main tank while the engine keeps running off the main fuel pump, yes, both are filled separately.
