Hey everyone,

I’ve been exploring an interesting idea for my Fiero: adapting an SQS Racing Sequential Shifter kit (originally designed for the Honda EP3 K20 transmission) to work with a GM F40 gearbox from a Cobalt SS. I realize this shifter is not cheap, and I know price can be a sticking point. Still, my main question here is feasibility rather than cost.

From what I understand, this SQS kit essentially converts the up/down lever motion into a push-pull action for the cables. My concerns are about whether the Honda EP3 gate spacing or throw distances are too different from the GM F40’s, and if that would require extensive internal modifications, or if it’s mostly a matter of fabricating custom cables and brackets.

I wanted to hear your thoughts on:

Mechanical Compatibility: Has anyone tried or seen a sequential “converter” style shifter adapted to the F40 or another non-Honda transmission?
Internal/External Mods: Is this likely to require reworking the shift tower or forks inside the F40, or could I just get away with custom cables/mounts?
Overall Feasibility: Is this a lost cause or a “doable” project with finding the right cables and fabrication to fit it in the hole?
Yes, the kit is expensive, and I realize there are more budget-friendly paths for shifting. But for me, this is more about the cool factor of a sequential setup. I’d love any input.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

SQS uses a cam system inside the body of the shifter in the cabin that pushes and pulls two cables just like the H pattern shifter does. So in theory if you were to buy one from SQS they would possibly be able to adapt the shifter for mid engine(cables going out the back) and they should be able to build you specific "Cam Wheels" that will have the exact push and pull spacing needed for the F40.

Interesting but spendy shifter.

FYI the F40 never came in the Cobalt SS. That was the F35.

Thank you for this. Found a universal kit for half the cost. Looks like it does do exactly as you described and uses a mechanical cam to change the gears.
