I would give it a try.
The 4 speed and 5 speed shifter have the same cable mounts. The 2 big differences are:
- The 4 speed has a reverse lockout and reverse light switch built in - both of these can be removed and should be removed if running a 5 speed.
- The gate width (or side to side movement) of the 4 speed shifter is narrower than the 5 speed. This definitely is an issue when trying to use the 4 speed shifter with the F40 (4 gates vs. 3), but the 4 speed and 5 speed both have 3 gates. My first "swap" with a Fiero was swapping out the 4 speed muncie to the isuzu 5 speed. I was able to keep the 4 speed shifter, so there is a chance it might also work with the F23.
If you want to know it works before getting it fully installed, you can mock up the shifter, cables and transmission on the bench and row through the gears to verify if it will work.
If it does not work, then all you will need to do is to modify the 4 speed shifter by elongating the slot that limits the shifter side to side motion.
