I was changing the fuel injector on my 1984 fiero, and when I took off the fuel injector housing, there is an oddly shaped piece of metal underneath where the fuel pressure regulator is located (opposite side of where the fuel injector is). I was wondering what it was, and if it's even meant to be there

That's under the Fuel Pressure regulator, right? Looking up from the bottom with the neck removed?

I remember that too... it's normal, but it looks weird as hell, I don't even really understand the point of it, because there's even a gasket that's supposed to go in there too. When you buy the rebuild kit, it comes with a foam ring that's supposed to go right between there and the lower part of the housing... which does literally nothing. Actually, I just figured it out, it's meant to be a filter because air would otherwise escape through there, rather than the air cleaner. Makes sense.

If you're not opening it up and modifying it, then it's perfectly OK. Have you considered rebuilding the whole TBI unit?

There's a rebuild kit you can buy on Rock Auto... let me see if I can find it:

This is the rebuild kit (minus the fuel pressure regulator diaphragm): https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=46920 ($31 bucks)
and this is just the fuel pressure regulator rebuild: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=46993 ($49 bucks)

BUT... super sneaky... the 1984 Chevrolet Corvette came with TWO of these throttle bodies running in tandem on the Cross-Fire Injection 350 V8. They sell the ENTIRE kit... rebuild kit with all the gaskets, PLUS... the fuel pressure regulator kit... TIMES TWO OF EVERYTHING... for $51 bucks: https://www.rockauto.com/en...einfo.php?pk=1324565

Same exact kit as mentioned above, just two of them... so you have a spare set of everything.

Yes, it's where you mentioned. It had me confused but it's great to know that it's not something that's not meant to be there. Those links are very helpful as well, thank you!
